Rhapsody: A Musical Adventure (DS)

Rhapsody: A Musical Adventure review (DS)

Reviewed on January 08, 2009

Every once in a while, something will come along and completely blow me away and surprise me by its quality. Video games tend to do this every so often, and recently I was witness to this very phenomenon occurring. There was a game released for the Sony Playstation a while back named Rhapsody, a cute strategy RPG game that got by on its musical charm and unique storyline.
Shadow Hearts: Covenant (PlayStation 2)

Shadow Hearts: Covenant review (PS2)

Reviewed on December 31, 2008

I didn't know what to think of this game. A lot of people are conflicted on whether it's truly an upgrade over the original Shadow Hearts. As someone who was blown away by the quality of that game, I was curious to see if the sequel could live up to it. And boy, did it. Not only does it surpass Shadow Hearts in my eyes, it has become one of, if not the best, video games I have ever played in my entire life. From amazing graphics to a varied and rich soundtrack, I was completely blown away by eve...
Shadow Hearts (PlayStation 2)

Shadow Hearts review (PS2)

Reviewed on December 18, 2008

There's a lot of complaints about role playing games nowadays. People say they are nothing more than glorified books, with stale battle systems (I got to push X again? Sigh.), boring storylines (save the damsel in distress or save the world from an evil madman in some ancient fantasy land!), and redundant fetch quests. And they'd be right. As big of a RPG fan as I am, I can admit to the flaws of the genre, and I wished a game would come along and break all the stereotypes and blow me away.
Koudelka (PlayStation)

Koudelka review (PSX)

Reviewed on October 07, 2008

The great thing about Koudelka is the atmosphere and storyline. This is not your typical Japanese RPG with cheery graphics and a cutesy storyline with a bunch of children. This game takes place in a haunted castle in 1898, and you control three characters who not only are adults, but also very mature. It's nice to see that in a RPG for a change. There's also a bunch of great scenes as you really get to see the characters develop, and the main villain is up there with Eve from the Parasite Eve ga...

Front Mission review (DS)

Reviewed on May 19, 2008

One of the main complaints that I, as well as many other gamers that I know, have about the gaming industry nowadays is the fact that there are way too many ports and remakes being released. The Game Boy Advance was notorious for this, especially with the constant Super Mario Advance games. However, the good news about the two main ports/remakes I got for the Nintendo DS is the fact that neither of the games ever came out in America before. I had played them on ROMs on my computer over the years...
Final Fantasy III (DS)

Final Fantasy III review (DS)

Reviewed on May 19, 2008

I am a huge fan of the Final Fantasy series, as you may have noticed over the years due to my various Final Fantasy reviews and walkthroughs. Growing up, I always wanted to play the original Final Fantasy 3, but back then there was no translations or emulation available, so it was always one of those mysterious games I knew very little about, yet yearned to play regardless. I had heard the sequel to Final Fantasy was awful (and it turned out to be the truth), but Square really fixed things up fo...

Ninja Gaiden review (NES)

Reviewed on May 20, 2007

There have been a few series over the years that I have enjoyed a lot. Final Fantasy, Dragon Warrior and Mega Man are just a few of the many video game series that I have enjoyed to play over the years. However, one of my favorite series over the years has been a series called Ninja Gaiden. A lot of people are fans of the series, but the series never seemed to get the popular recognition of the series I previously mentioned.

Contra (NES)

Contra review (NES)

Reviewed on May 20, 2007

The Nintendo Entertainment System had a lot of quality games. It also had a lot of arcade to console translations. Yup, the arcade fad did not hit when Playstation or Nintendo 64 started, no, it went all the way back to the days of the NES. Games such as Bad Dudes and Double Dragon were just a few of the many games that went from arcade hit to NES game. Contra was another one of these games.
Tekken 3 (Arcade)

Tekken 3 review (ARC)

Reviewed on May 20, 2007

I have played a lot of Arcade games in my lifetime. Some I have enjoyed very much, and some were the biggest waste of change I have ever wasted. The Fighting game genre has always been very well represented on the arcade scene since the explosion of Street Fighter 2 a few years back. But some of the fighting games have just been plain boring. The Mortal Kombat series, with the exception of part 2, has never really been a great fighting game series. But for every few Mortal Kombat series, there a...
Pong (Arcade)

Pong review (ARC)

Reviewed on May 20, 2007

We all know what Pong is by now, it's pretty much the first commercial home based game ever released. Sure, there could be a debate as to what the first ever game was, but I'm just going to go easy and not bore you with the history of this game, because you can go buy a book or read Whelkman's boring review or whatnot. Instead, I am going to tell you about Pong. I hope this doesn't disappoint you, as I am never one to bore with historical facts like the grandfather's name of the person who made ...

Marvel vs. Capcom: Clash of Super Heroes review (ARC)

Reviewed on May 20, 2007

When I used to make regular trips to the arcade, I used to play Marvel vs. Capcom a lot. Since I am a huge fan of 2D fighting games, especially ones made by Capcom, I was really excited about the game. Featuring all of my favorite Marvel and Capcom characters, ranging from Magnetto to Mega Man, I knew I was going to love the game. And the Arcade version did not disappoint. Hell, I still play this game from time to time whenever I decide to make a trip over to the local arcade or Cici’s Pizza, si...
Xenosaga Episode I: Der Wille zur Macht (PlayStation 2)

Xenosaga Episode I: Der Wille zur Macht review (PS2)

Reviewed on March 13, 2007

One of the most common complaints that RPG fans have about the current state of the genre is that there's too much videos and storyline and not enough gameplay. While this does tend to be the rule nowadays, I as an RPG fan have no problem with this evolution, as role playing games have always focused on storyline and I am sure that if developers had the technology in the SNES/NES era, we'd have seen a lot more games like Xenogears and Final Fantasy X back then, too.
Mighty Final Fight (NES)

Mighty Final Fight review (NES)

Reviewed on February 03, 2007

Porting an arcade/SNES classic to the NES had to be one of the oddest ideas Capcom has had. How could they possibly recreate the magic that the classic Final Fight created on an outdated console like the 8-bit NES? Not only was this one of the last games to come out for the console, it also happened to come out 2 years after the SNES port! The SNES port was no classic, but it managed to recreate the arcade experience faithfully (for the most part), and there's no way the NES could pull that off,...
Kirby's Dream Land (Game Boy)

Kirby's Dream Land review (GB)

Reviewed on February 01, 2007

I always assumed Kirby's Adventure was the first Kirby game, but it turns out the old cotton candy ball of fun had a previous adventure for the Game Boy. Unfortunately, the game is not a classic like its NES sequel was, but I still found myself having an enjoyable time progressing through each of Kirby Dream Land's five outstanding levels.
Dragon Quest VIII: Journey of the Cursed King (PlayStation 2)

Dragon Quest VIII: Journey of the Cursed King review (PS2)

Reviewed on September 01, 2006

Sometimes, reactions of people just surprise the hell out of me. One such instance happened to me a few weeks back, when I took a visit to the GameFAQs "RPG - Everything Else" board. With all the elitism and nitpicking that the regulars do, I should not have been THAT surprised to find classic comments like "Dragon Quest 8 is the most boring RPG to ever come out.", and "It may look pretty, but it's simple as hell and one of the worst games to come out in quite some time." I could not disagree mo...

NCAA Football 07 review (PS2)

Reviewed on July 25, 2006

Once in a while, a game comes around that totally redefines video gaming forever. Personally, I have experienced this with a few titles, most notably Super Mario Brothers 3 and Final Fantasy 7. NCAA Football 2004 was the last game to do this for me, as the game was simply phenomenal and one of the most addicting games ever. Then, NCAA Football 2005 came around and disappointed many, including myself, with its focus on defense being the major flaw. NCAA Football 06 tried to fix the flaws, and suc...
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles IV: Turtles in Time (SNES)

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles IV: Turtles in Time review (SNES)

Reviewed on December 19, 2005

The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles series is one that will live forever in my mind, whether referring to the comic book series it originated from, the awesome movie trilogy, or the great early video games. Turtles in Time was the second Turtles game to be released in the Arcade, and while not living up to the expectations I had after the stellar original, it was still a fun game to play through, albeit on the short side. Konami didn't make matters much better when it was released on the Super Nint...
Alias (PlayStation 2)

Alias review (PS2)

Reviewed on November 10, 2005

A few days ago, I reviewed Final Fantasy X-2, a game I had high expectations for, but ended up sorely disappointing me. Fortunately, there are games out there that manage to not only live up to expectations, but completely blow me away when I least expect it. While these games are not as common as they used to be (I can name dozens of NES games I expected nothing out of and ended up enjoying tremendously), it is still a treat to buy a game not knowing exactly what to expect, yet coming away impr...
Jeopardy! Junior Edition (NES)

Jeopardy! Junior Edition review (NES)

Reviewed on September 16, 2005

We all have seen the game show Jeopardy at least one time in our lives. It's one of the best game shows to watch on television, because it puts your brains to the test, and you can play along with the people on the game show. Some fools decided to come along and port this experience onto the NES, just because everything in the history of the world had to be ported onto the NES. I'm surprised we didn't see a game based off Christopher Columbus where you go around killing ice cream store owners an...
