Sonic CD: The Woes and Happiness
July 17, 2007

Just the other night, I was enjoying a good game of Sonic CD via the Gems Collection. It was brutally awesome, and the crazy-fun stages/boss battles had me hooked.

But the best was yet to come. I had gotten to Act 3 of Stardust Speedway Zone-- more specifically, the race against Metal Sonic. Man, it was fun. I felt the adrenaline rush as he passed me by, the desperation of losing my rings to his electrical attack, and the thrill of barely pushing past him to the finish line, blowing him up and saving Amy.

Satisfied with a hard day's work, I shut my GameCube off.

Wait a minute. Did that save? I thought it might have, but I checked, just to make sure. To my utter horror, I found that Sonic was dispatched to Wacky Workbench Zone, where I had started from.

I gathered my breath, and was about to let out a raging primal scream of fury and cannibalism...

Then, suddenly, I stopped. I realized that having to go back to WWZ meant that I would get to do the Metal Sonic race all over again.

Oddly enough, I felt content inside. It was so weird, I still can't understand it. But, I'm strangely optimistic that I'll be able to reexperience all the thrills, agonies, and fun of Sonic CD again.

Next time, though, I'm saving. Can't stop me from that.

So, next time you lose your progress in a really fun game, and you just want to let out a raging primal scream of fury and cannibalism, just remember that if the experience was worth the first playthrough, then it should be worth the second. It's tough, but I did it. And I think you can, too.
