Art teacher rant
August 21, 2006

School starts in a week, and frankly, I don't think I'm up to it. I'm not in the honors program -which some people think I should be- so that's a plus for me and the Easy Meter, but I'm not so sure about English Comp. I've never been THAT GOOD at writing essays; sure I get by, but nothing too spectacular. And I can't BS my way through one like my sister can, so I don't know how I'm going to do in that class. I'm kind of excited, however, to be taking Intro to Sociology. It sounds really interesting. But then there's history, which I'm all right at, and art.

I actually didn't do that well in art in my high school because my art teacher didn't like the stuff I was doing. I love to draw and paint dragons and other fanciful creatures, nature, etc., but NOT people. I hate drawing people. They suck. And she was the epitome of "I love self-portraits!" and "Let's make everything all pretty with butterflies and flowers!" >_O So naturally, my urge to depict dragons became overwhelming, and that's basically all I did my senoir year.

She didn't really appreciate my work then, especially when I painted a character from my manga, this dragon named Skoll. Now, Skoll looks like evil. His head is devoid of skin, save for what keeps his eyes and jaw together. The rest of his body is black with green highlights and it looks like he's malnourished. Ugly, creepy guy. At least to her -I think he's pretty freaking cool. So, after I complete him, I need an opinion for the background colors, so I hold him up to my teacher and say, "What do you think the colors in the back need to be?" very casually. She almost passes out and most of the class cgeers me on. I am not the only who hates her. I mean, she tells us to be free and let our minds go where they wish, but we can't create something that doesn't exist or looks demonic or, heaven forbid, it doesn't have a human face! No, we can't have violence. We can't have nudity, though colleges allow it, and even other schools within the fucking district allow it. No, no, not us! Because she is trying to make our work acceptable to HER. She wants HER ideas and HER imagination to be put on the page, not ours! "Oh, no Lizzy, you can't draw a dragon; that's not realistic. Oh no, Lizzy, you can't do that because it looks like a demon from Hell. Now, Lizzy, you have to make everything you draw pretty and flowery because that's how you express yourself."

FUCK YOU, TALLENT! HOW'S THAT FOR PRETTY AND FLOWERY, YOU BUTTERFLY-OBSESSED BITCH!?

.....sorry. As you can see, I have a lot of pent up rage against her.

But anyway, back onto the original subject. I hope, my GOD do I hope I get along with my art professor. Hopefully, they won't be as restrictive as Tallent was. For both our sakes.

Dragons are definitely artistic and definitely cool. Your teacher had issues.
