Wii Spree!
December 23, 2007

With less than 24 hours remaining until my Wii arrives (I've been tracking it, and our delivery guy usually dumps our stuff off around 2pm), I'm getting more and more excited. We bought some stuff for it this weekend, and I convinced my boss to let me go home whenever it shows up. :D

So, Saturday we ended up with:

Wii Play (simply for the extra remote)
Metroid Prime 3
Super Mario Galaxy
Transformers: The Game (that one's purely the hubby's choice)
Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn
Extra nunchuck
Strategy guides for SMG & MP3
Pre-order for Brawl

So then, over this weekend, the hubby and I saw a video review for Rampage: Total Destruction. (Put up on Youtube by WiiTv.com.) The guy seemed to be complaining, not that the game had bad control, or that the graphics were awful, but that the gameplay and environs were repetitive. Hubby and I looked at each other and went, "No shit? Rampage has never been rocket science, we loved it, and this looks like more of what we enjoyed."

Then, I discovered it was on sale on Amazon for $20. So he bought it for us - we want games we can play together. And some old-school building trashing fun sounds like the ticket.

Given that today we moved our entire living room around (my mother donated a new loveseat and chair so we had more seats) we now have plenty of room for our new toy.

And as for some game progress I'm proud of. I had put Tales of Eternia (PSP) down for a bit because I was a couple of rooms before the big Volt battle. I was reasonably sure I had a glitch-free copy, but I was annoyed with one of the puzzles about two rooms beforehand, and I just never got back to it. Recently, I'd been in the mood to play again, since I really do love that game, made it to Volt.. who promptly and repeatedly handed me my ass on an electrified silver platter.

So again, I walked away for a little bit (this time was only about 1 week, and mostly because I just simply didn't have the energy to play much).

So tonight, while waiting for my pain medicine to kick in, I thought that I'd tweak the AI settings and try again. And FINALLY, after probably the 10th time, I did it!

I had to set my AI for "Prevent Enemy Attack" so my team wouldn't let up the pressure. I miss the ToS Heal commands, but this worked out okay. When you get him down to 10,000 HP or less he really starts hitting you with some heavy attacks, so I just stayed out of range, my party (mostly) followed, and enough people survived to revive the others while I kept beating on him.

I'm now in Balir's Castle and I'm trying to level up some, but I'm already going to have to go back down and replenish my stock of items. Blah. At least if I level the next battle shouldn't be THAT bad. I hope. :P

cool. enjoy your Wii!

i recommend Zack & Wiki or Trauma Center: New Blood for the two-player co-op as future Wii purchases. can't wait for Brawl. :)

If you and your husband are good at games that require skill, then you would almsot certainly have a blast with Trauma Center: New Blood. It's a bit much for one player, but with two people operating together I can imagine it just being fantastic.

Rampage is probably going to disappoint you, I'm sorry to say. I know the series is about repetition and such, but I still have more fun with the N64 Rampage: Universal Tour than I had with the Wii one. My wife and I were both disappointed. It's not unplayable or anything, but it just seems to be missing some of the magic. Still, for $20... you could do worse.

I hope you and your husband enjoy the Wii as much as I've enjoyed mine. It's such a great system!

Rampage is good fun, I agree.

How's the port on the PSP for Eternia anyway? I've been considering picking it up myself having recently playing through the game on emulator and really enjoying it. It's just... I've been spending a little too much on games recently so I've held off on purchasing it. Did you check out my review I posted? I really like that game. I had my characters battle tp and attack frequency set at 4 typically.

A few days ago I caught myself mimmicking Keal yelling "Heal!" as I was walkin' home frmo the bus stop. Haha, I love voices in battle.

I love the PSP port. I never played the original in any form, so I've heard there's a bit more slowdown in the port, but I've not really had any issues.

The only thing you have to watch out for is any of the discs that have lower than a 2.5 firmware update along with it tend to have a glitch - after you beat Volt and hit the switch, it freezes and you can't go on. Mine is one of the un-glitched copies and I think all new copies are safe (I bought mine off Ebay so I was damn lucky I didn't get scammed. I never knew about the glitch until AFTER I bought it.)

Still, well worth it, and probably the next PSP game I'll finish, now that I've gotten past Volt.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts on it, HG. I'm still glad we got it though, because as you said, for $20 we couldn't really go wrong. Especially since so many of the games are $50 new.

I'm truly excited - seeing the words "Out for Delivery" is making the part of the day that I have to work draaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaag on. Other than handhelds, we haven't purchased a new console in a few years now, so I'm anxious to try it out.

Any other games besides Trauma Center you want to recommend? And are there any accessories you would recommend? We're planning on, a little later (since we are now effectively broke, besides bill money :P), a classic controller or two, a memory card, and a charger station. Anything else?

I've seen good ratings on that one. What IS it exactly?

I don't know how patient you are with mini-games, but I feel that Mario Party 8 is (contrary to most reviews) one of the best in the series to date. Also, Rayman: Raving Rabbids 2 is great. My brother-in-law and I were laughing our heads off when we played it over Thanksgiving. The first one has a touch more personality in places, but it's not as polished a product overall. The second one is so sickeningly cute (in an over-the-top way) that it's impossible to resist!

It's a point and click adventure game. The game is often compared to the Monkey Island games with some Zelda style puzzles thrown in.

You play a chocolate bar munching pirate name Zack and his sea-monkey sidekick Wiki can literally transform into a bell. When you shake Wiki it'll transform live objects into inanimate tools which you can then use to solve the game's environmental puzzles. Centipedes turn into saws etc. The objective of each stage is to recover one of Barbaros' body parts..er um treasure. The game is alot of fun, it's challenging, makes good use of the wii remote, has that cute/wacky Japanese style humor.

for $40, i highly recommend this game. it's one of those sleeper hits many will overlook and the game won't be easy to find.

edit: oh, i forgot to mention Elebits. it's another one of those overlooked wacky games like Zack&Wiki you can't miss. i don't think they make anymore new copies but if you can find one that is used, it's a definite pick-up!
