If it were a movie, Secrets of the Ark would be an “Indiana Jones” picture. It would be a huge success and earn a lot of money at the box office because it wouldn’t interrupt itself with inane puzzles the viewer had to solve. Secrets of the Ark feels like that movie, but you have to put up with sheer torture to watch each scene unfold.

In this game, there is only one winner. Cooperation disintegrates, and the game devolves into a savage contest of every man for himself. LAUNCH DETECTED flashes across the map again and again as enemies open fire and allies backstab each other. Every act of aggression leaves you wide open to retaliation; silos and submarines are helpless in launch mode, and their location is broadcast to the entire world when they fire ballistic missiles. But the primary goal of DEFCON isn’t to survive: it’s to obliterate your enemies.

There’s a magical moment in each game of Pacific Storm: Allies where all the tiny nit-picking in the planning stages and the tweaking to your forces manoeuvres in-battle all come together to form one huge, working scene of battle, or darting attacks and sneaking counterattacks. To watch you plans take effect and wipe out an enemy fleet or to watch a hail of torpedoes you failed to plan against smash into the bow of your battleship from the cockpit of a defending fighter is a unique feeling. Total control puts victory or defeat squarely on your shoulders and yours alone.

If you persevere with the single player racing mode, you'll find beautiful scenery, gravity-defying tracks, and uber-fast speeds. If you're unlucky, you may also encounter another issue - crashing into the barriers occasionally causes the player to become impaled right through the scenery.

While Sparta may look nice, it feels as though somebody took great elements from all over the RTS genre and put them all together in one game. It's a case where the whole is less than the sum of its parts, probably due to the fact that most of the parts are quite dated.

The damage engine in particular is exceptional, as you can see individual sails being ripped, and holes appearing in the sides of the ships due to cannon fire. Honestly, it is quite an impressive sight. The sea itself is handled very well, with sharks circling for snacks in the form of men overboard!

This will please fans of the book, as will how faithful the game remains to Verne's pre-written legacy. While exploring the island, you'll come across key locations such as the mill, Granite House and the littering of sulphuric pools that dot the island. You'll find numerous references to the original party that called the island home as well as an appreciated (if not rather hackneyed) explanation as to how the start of the game links in to the finale of the book.

The outlandish visuals are obviously a major leap forward – the world of Lost Wages has been completely redefined in 256-color VGA to the point where it looks like a zany cartoon. Those lovelorn ladies, on the other hand, go for sultry realism . . . except for that one time when you have to get it on with a deluxe model blow-up doll, but that doesn’t really count.

As a mystery story, White Wolf is somewhat dry. Nancy has been hired to investigate a series of dangerous incidents, including a few explosions, at Icicle Creek Lodge, but in order to fully investigate she’ll have to pull triple duty as a maid, cook, and detective. The plot unfolds steadily enough, but there’s never really the level of intrigue or danger that it so desperately tries to achieve. Sure, there are bombings—but nobody dies. Yeah, everyone’s a viable suspect with possible motives—but, really, so what?

If you can find satisfaction in high percentages, Rock Legend just might be your game, as It's basically clicking through menus until as many bars as possible say 100%, but with a theme. Because without the theme, it'd hardly even be a game. Almost nothing it impresses except ideas, but those are ruined. It isn't horrible execution that ruins them, however, but an utter lack of execution.

It's not that the artwork is bad—it's not—but it's obscure and could mean a few things. Half the time, you'll look at a picture and say to yourself “Hmm, that's either a stick, a log, a limb, a branch or a twig or something else I'm forgetting.” Solving the puzzles is tiresome instead of fun.

Initially you'd be forgiven for thinking that the mechanics of gameplay are rather intricate, but this really isn't the case. The story's a standard good versus evil affair, and the in-game dress-up option is nothing beyond an annoyance.

While their looks and sounds have been updated, both Sam and Max retain all the personality they boasted in 1993. Deadpan and noir-inspired Sam is the canine shamus with a love for Bogart-like wordplay and overloaded sentences, while Max, the psychotic shark-toothed rabbity-thing, revisits his role as the hyperkinetic, deranged sidekick. They thrive in a familiar setting, too; each of the six episodes has the expected smattering of insanity, mindless violence and laugh-out-loud moments housed within a simple and accessible point-and-click interface.

This isn't a particularly original title, but the level of craftsmanship in its components makes it something more than just another hack & slash RPG. Somewhere down the line, Loki cast away the clichés of its genre and became a work of art.

The odds are stacked against you, yes. But when you can freeze the odds where they stand and think your way around them, it's not so overwhelming. Few games manage to portray the same sense of complexity that UFO Aftershock does. And even fewer do so with the same grace.
