Left 4 Dead review (PC)Reviewed on August 16, 2011Left 4 Dead is an intense horror experience with a pitch-perfect atmosphere of paranoia and portending doom, punctuated with madcap battles against massive zombie hordes. Or, at least, it is for about an hour or so. Once the player becomes immune to the creepy music, desensitized to clawing swarms of zombies, and gets to know the maps a little better, the game quickly becomes nothing more than a straight-faced co-op shooter. |

Dead Nation review (PS3)Reviewed on August 14, 2011Dead Nation did something that I didn't think could be done anymore: it scared me with zombies. |

Salamander Deluxe Pack Plus review (SAT)Reviewed on August 14, 20111986's Salamander, the first title in the 1997 release of Salamander Deluxe Pack Plus, acts as an ungrounded version of Gradius, which came out a year prior. Whereas Gradius required a near-methodical mindset, thanks to its checkpoint system, Salamander is more high-octane and in your face, adjusting the gameplay accordingly. |

Lander review (PC)Reviewed on August 13, 2011"It takes subtlety to succeed here. But it is extremely rewarding when you do, and float through the maze-like levels inside the planet's surface - or through the canyons and caves. The eerie space-music perfectly accompanies you on the trip there." |

West review (X360)Reviewed on August 12, 2011West is not quite the deep wonderland I had hoped for. It's a straightforward RPG with overt moral prattle. Guiding us into deep thought is something an intelligent game should do, but forcing us down that avenue dulls the experience. |

Dragon Ball Z: Sagas review (PS2)Reviewed on August 06, 2011Dragon Ball Z: Sagas is an uninteresting brawler made worse by a gaping hole in the gameplay. It was a novel idea turning DBZ into a brawler, but Avalanche would have been better off taking the expected route in creating an arcade style beat 'em up. |

Bastion review (X360)Reviewed on August 03, 2011...you almost feel like you didn't want it to end in the first place, and it wasn't just because of that welcoming old voice or the awesome visuals. The game itself is fun, challenging and addictive thanks to it's simple and easy to pick up gameplay. Bastion has something that a lot of recent “artsy” games don't: both style and substance. |

Gradius V review (PS2)Reviewed on August 01, 2011I've stated that I like playing the first Gradius because of its fine balance, but Gradius V is the first time in the main series where I've genuinely enjoyed playing the whole thing, from start to finish. |

Shadows of the Damned review (X360)Reviewed on July 31, 2011It's rare to experience a truly funny video game these days. It seems most games stumble over themselves trying to create life-like experiences and gritty, scintillating gameplay; humor is a mere afterthought. |

Cthulhu Saves the World review (X360)Reviewed on July 31, 2011On occasion, the tributes to its inspirations are a bit over-enthusiastic and the frequent fourth-wall breaking can be obnoxious, but the vast majority of this game is well written and funny. |

Tales of Vesperia review (X360)Reviewed on July 29, 2011Even when it stumbles - and make no mistake, it stumbles - it's hard to not like Tales of Vesperia. It's big, dumb, JRPG fun. |

Door Door review (NES)Reviewed on July 28, 2011A game like this thrives on simple, addictive and fast-paced gameplay. It has simplicity down pat, but where it falters is speed. |

Antipole review (X360)Reviewed on July 26, 2011Antipole is like a blast from the past, except it came out recently. It's loaded with simple 2D platforming and basic gunplay, but the game is far from easy. Your character's motions are fast and intense, poignantly loose to add challenge to the platforming aspect. Timing your jumps and maneuvering is the key, but it's not all that will save your red-coated butt. |

Lair review (PS3)Reviewed on July 19, 2011The game from this point on expertly goads you into taking on the role of the righteous Asylian dragon knight Rohn in his quest to stamp out the barbarian Mokai hordes. Even to the point where our hero proclaims fateful phrases such as “God was with us today!”, while making the skies “Rain with Mokai blood”. You burn them out of the sky, torch the screaming soldiers with dragon fire. (...) |

Dash Galaxy in the Alien Asylum review (NES)Reviewed on July 18, 2011Who could forget the feeling that you had wasted all those weeks of allowance after purchasing Dash Galaxy? You felt like you worked your tush off for a meager prize and you refused to be disappointed by it. You wanted to finish it to get your money's worth, but you knew you would never succeed. |

Gradius Deluxe Pack review (SAT)Reviewed on July 17, 2011If there's one thing I can take away from Gradius Deluxe Pack, it's that there's a right way and a wrong way to make a challenging game. |
