N3: Ninety-Nine Nights review (X360)Reviewed on December 08, 2006As you fight off a rather small group of goblins with your infantry unit in the middle of a stream, you have this feeling something isn't right. It's too easy. Around that point, you suddenly get a short cutscene of a giant troll with his huge army of orcs charge down a hill towards your position. You quickly get rid of the goblins, and with your troops behind you, charge up the same hill to greet them midway. You know it's not gonna be an easy fight, because one of their orcs can easily ... |

Jump Ultimate Stars review (DS)Reviewed on December 04, 2006Shonen Jump is back. No, not the ever-so-popular Japanese magazine. I’m talking about the animated reality in which Shonen Jump characters exist. The place is inhabited heroes like Goku and Piccolo from Dragon Ball, Monkey D. Luffy and crew from One Piece, and the elite ninjas of Naruto fame. Any of those names sound familiar? If you’re a fan of current anime, a devout reader of its respective mangas, or just watch primetime Cartoon Network, these characters ou... |

Company of Heroes review (PC)Reviewed on December 03, 2006Your boat arrives at the sandy shore, but what awaits for many is death. Every enemy is ready, guns at their side. The crashing of waves is drowned out by immense fire, bullets flying everywhere. What was once your best friend is now a blood ridden corpse. But you and your comrades push forward with determination. Your infantry uses all the tricks up their sleeves - flanking from various directions, calling in artillery fire. What seems like days of fighting finally ends, and you are victorious.... |

Gears of War review (X360)Reviewed on December 02, 2006If you take a look at the ol' recipe for success in the video game cookbook, you'll be sure to find excessive violence, chaotic action, and incredible graphics. Gears of War of manages to include all of these ingredients, from blood splatting across the screen to intense battle sequences against a horde of foes. And the graphics...well, they speak for themselves; anyone who doesn't think the game looks impressive needs to get their eyes checked. Along with these key elements, Epic Games throws i... |

Sprung: A Game Where Everyone Scores review (DS)Reviewed on November 29, 2006I wasn't around during the glory days of text adventures, but I would expect it to compare slightly to Sprung. This game isn't really a "game" itself, but a dating sim comprised of different choices you pick to beat levels. You don't actually play anything since you only pick choices throughout the game. It definitely won't improve your chances of picking up chicks in the future(good try, though), but the game does have its bright spots where it'll send you tearing up from laughter. |

Three Sisters' Story review (PC)Reviewed on November 28, 2006For an instant, the photograph appears to exude happiness. A father embraces his sons, an arm around each young man, and smiles light up their faces. Their eyes, however, remain obscured in ominous shadow. The Three Sisters’ Story prologue immediately reveals the family’s unfortunate fate. The proud patriarch, facing financial ruin and public shame, takes his own life. The mother, not even pictured, insignificantly fades into death, unable to bear any of her newfound burden. And the... |

Sonic the Hedgehog review (X360)Reviewed on November 24, 2006Despite what the title might imply, Sonic won't be the only hedgehog you'll be controlling in Sonic the Hedgehog. However, Shadow, along with the new addition to the cast, Silver, won't be available right away, leaving you to mess around with Sonic for the time-being. Which isn't a bad thing. I mean, it's Sonic, so you'll be treated to the typical, fast-paced, energetic stages that we've all known and love, right? |

Elite Beat Agents review (DS)Reviewed on November 21, 2006Every time I close my eyes, a mesmerizing array of contracting circles invades the void. This afterimage effect isn't unique; it's a universal mark of any all-consuming game, rhythm or otherwise. But this title delivers more than the intense challenge of tapping your stylus to the beat. The Elite Beat Agents appear only in the most dire situations, providing hope and courage with their grooves and sweet boogie moves. How you follow the choreography on the bottom screen affects a cr... |

Okami review (PS2)Reviewed on November 19, 2006In a gaming field brimming with adrenaline-pumping realism and in-your-face action, Okami is not only proof of the strength of imagination and mysticism, but also a courageous breath of fresh air. |

Contact review (DS)Reviewed on November 19, 2006The Professor is having a rough day. Just after getting his trans-dimensional communications machine to work and contacting you, his ship gets attacked by some roving band of intergalactic thugs. As his spaceship dodges a volley of laser beams, one of the ship’s fuel cells tumbles out at falls toward a nearby planet. The little bundle of energy happens to fall in front of Terry, an average teenager/silent protagonist extraordinaire. Before the young hero can comprehend what’s going on, the Profe... |

Gears of War review (X360)Reviewed on November 17, 2006“Boomers!” Dom yells from across the courtyard. I press A and slam Marcus into cover. The massive Locust creature fires a rocket that thankfully flies over my head from behind the cover. While he reloads I stick my noggin out and unleash a flurry of Bullets into the beastly creature. No luck, he continues to stand and prepares another shot that slams into the hard concrete slab in front of me. I slide my face out unleash another full clip of ammo, and watch as vile Locust falls over on his back ... |

Soukyugurentai review (ARC)Reviewed on November 15, 2006Soukyugurentai veers dangerously close to the prototypicality trap that made its technically flawless but hopelessly average ST-V sister Shienryu worthless. Raizing's creativity jumps out at you like the narrative in a Calculus textbook; I suppose the turrets and turbojets on display are about as exciting as they come, but that doesn't change the fact that they're the same turrets and turbojets you've been plowing through since Raiden II. Level backdrops are equally benign—c... |

Elite Beat Agents review (DS)Reviewed on November 14, 2006You’re having a bad day. The electricity went off while you were asleep last night, effectively disabling your alarm clock. In an attempt to rush through breakfast, you accidentally let the toast burn. You ran out of toilet paper at the worst possible time. After working an hour and a half of overtime, your boss fires you at the end of the day. When you arrived back at the parking lot, you discovered that your car has been stolen and that your cell phone had run out of battery life. When you wal... |

Capcom Classics Collection Vol. 1 review (XBX)Reviewed on November 14, 2006Compilations. They all have the potential to be great, especially upon hearing some of their titles, like Namco Museum, Sonic Mega Collection Plus, Street Fighter Anniversary Collection, and so on. Unfortunately, a lot of them disappoint, especially the ones I've mentioned. Two Street Fighter games doesn't really qualify as a collection, the Sonic selection isn't that great outside of the main four, and Namco cranks out the exact same list of Museum games for almost every single console. Thankfu... |

Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney - Justice for All review (DS)Reviewed on November 12, 2006As the witness’s voice echoes through the courtroom, only one thing remains clear: your future as the defendant is slowly slipping into oblivion. If there was any chance that the case could be won, it’s definitely not stacked in your favor. The opposition seems to have an unblemished case against you; there are the photos of the crime scene, the evidence recovered, and the witness giving his testimony. There’s just one problem: you know you’re innocent. That witness speaking in front of the cour... |

Touch Detective review (DS)Reviewed on November 11, 2006Personality. That’s what the heroine and her fellow members of Touch Detective lack. Despite living in a quirky world embroiled in fanciful mysteries, these inhabitants dribble through lifeless dialogue and muddle toward anticlimactic case resolutions. Of course, such behavior could be expected when some of the residents appear dead. The game establishes a unique combination of dainty and grim, but it’s not the only DS sleuthing adventure. With natural comparisons to the charismatic <... |

Mortal Kombat: Armageddon review (PS2)Reviewed on November 10, 2006“The fury of Mortal Kombat has brought the realms to the brink of total destruction. Every warrior has been summoned to this last epic battle, where survival depends on their ability to…FIGHT!!” This is the main tagline for Midway’s latest inception into the Mortal Kombat universe of fighting games. As the current generation console systems begin to make way for the dawn of a new generation of gaming, Mortal Kombat offers gamers one final monstrosity of its brutal legacy. |
