Silent Hill (PlayStation)

Silent Hill review (PSX)

Reviewed on March 29, 2007

Everyone--to this day--compares Resident Evil to Silent Hill. Both surfaced around the same time, both games received enormous success with their original release and both brought the horror genre, at least for a time, into the spotlight. But in essence, comparing Resident Evil to Silent Hill is like comparing Dawn of the Dead to The Ring. Both are great in their own right, but one has a gore/survival feel to it, the other a haunting, psychological feel. In my opinion...

Grandia is one of the most clichéd RPGs ever made. It’s also one of the best. The key is execution.

Darkstone review (PSX)

Reviewed on January 04, 2007

Dark Stone is a game where challenges lie ahead, dungeons await looting and monsters sign their death sentences. With a multiple ways to play this game, it’s no surprise it has nearly infinite replay value. Nearly.

Silent Hill (PlayStation)

Silent Hill review (PSX)

Reviewed on November 22, 2006

The fog-shrouded town is infested with all sorts of things that go bump in the night and Harry’s not exactly the ideal monster-slayer — being a bit clumsy and not a particularly sharp marksman. And whenever he starts to feel secure that he’s on top of things, his surroundings tend to get a bit askew. With loud clangings and bangings, the foggy surroundings melt away, leaving Harry in a dark, hellish world surrounded by rusty metallic walls.

Resident Evil 2 (PlayStation)

Resident Evil 2 review (PSX)

Reviewed on November 10, 2006

With Resident Evil 2, Capcom has once again created a masterpiece of Survival Horror. The story continues from the events of Resident Evil, following the experiences of Leon S. Kennedy and Claire Redfield as they attempt to uncover the horrible truth behind the zombie infestation of Raccoon City. The story unfolds within the walls of the Raccoon City Police Department. Leon Kennedy has arrived to begin his first day as a member of the RPD where he meets up with Claire Redfield, the younger si...

Parasite Eve (PlayStation)

Parasite Eve review (PSX)

Reviewed on October 05, 2006

The main problem is that whenever Aya gets into a fight, the game has to load in the monsters, which takes a couple of seconds. During this time, the screen freezes and turns gray, essentially screaming, “Hey stupid! You are going to be in a fight. Gird those loins and start shooting!”

Brave Fencer Musashi (PlayStation)

Brave Fencer Musashi review (PSX)

Reviewed on August 24, 2006

Brave Fencer Musashi is a treasure trove of delightful oddities. First, there’s the amusing food obsession with locales such as Grillin’ Village and characters named Princess Fillet and Ginger Elle. Next, there’s the pint-sized hero, Musashi, a pre-teen samurai with a very high opinion of himself. Factor in other odd things, such as collectible action figures and the presence of Vambees (half-vampires, half-zombies), and you have the makings for an interesting ride. Combined with the e...

Xena: Warrior Princess review (PSX)

Two travelers hike along a winding road, heading toward some unknown destination when suddenly, the first stops, looks around, and tells her companion to wait. The traveler is Xena, the mighty warrior, destroyer of men, bringer of justice. Her companion is Gabrielle, best friend to the invincible warrior. Yet at this time, something is about to happen that neither expected… something that will turn an innocent hike into one of the largest searches ever conducted by none other than Xena herself,...

Castlevania: Symphony of the Night review (PSX)

Reviewed on August 17, 2006

Be wary. This review assumes you already know the basics of Symphony of the Night. Let this not be your first review. Instead, read another review and, if at all possible, play the game first. Come back afterwards and then read on.

Final Fantasy VII (PlayStation)

Final Fantasy VII review (PSX)

Reviewed on August 14, 2006

I’m sick of people praising Final Fantasy VII as the quintessential, ultimate RPG. Sure, it’s great and all, but seriously this game was easier than my roommate (and take my word for it - she is the loosest gal you’ll ever meet). It lives up to the quality and craftsmanship we’ve come to trust Square will deliver in every title, but it doesn’t even take a trained chip to plow through this adventure.

Pocket Fighter (PlayStation)

Pocket Fighter review (PSX)

Reviewed on July 23, 2006

It finally happened. After years of selling Street Fighter II, slightly modifying it half a dozen times, re-releasing it onto various consoles, creating a prequel trilogy, three versions of a sequel, crappy movies, cartoons, action figures, and dominating the 2D fighting genre, the beloved Street Fighter series franchise jumped the shark. Of course, Capcom wasn’t ready to part with one of their most lucrative series just yet. They needed something different, something that not only captur...

Star Ocean: The Second Story review (PSX)

Reviewed on July 21, 2006

The first time I played Star Ocean: The Second Story, I was duly impressed by the large number of spaceships (I quite like them) in the title screen cinematic. Intrigued, I started a game.

The Legend of Dragoon (PlayStation)

The Legend of Dragoon review (PSX)

Reviewed on July 09, 2006

When Legend of Dragoon made its way onto the PSX RPG scene, Sony foolishly billed it as a Final Fantasy killer. Gathered together in angered hoards, FF fanatics lit their burning torches and waddled aggressively through the streets, rioting and looting Cheeto stores nation-wide. "This is no Final Fantasy!" some cried while others sobbed over their Sephiroth plushies; it was a dark day, but somewhere behind all the rantings and unbridled hate, a game somehow got forgotten.

Final Fantasy IV review (PSX)

Reviewed on May 27, 2006

I’ve played Final Fantasy games involving cute “slam dancing” animals, a stupid creature called NORG, and implied man-on-man action in a notorious place called the Honey Bee Inn. What I haven’t experienced is a Final Fantasy game as insanely difficult as the fourth installment. Perhaps the first couple games featured on Final Fantasy Origins were the most challenging, but those PSone incarnations were on a glorious easy setting that made things a breeze. This isn’t the ca...

Medal of Honor (PlayStation)

Medal of Honor review (PSX)

Reviewed on April 27, 2006

In his briefing, Jimmy is given authorization papers to show guards. He’s told to AVOID combat, sneak around, do what he has to do and get out as quickly as possible. And when he does that, the one-star (maybe two) rating he’ll get upon achieving this hollow success will weigh upon his heart like a scarlet letter of shame.

Psychic Detective (PlayStation)

Psychic Detective review (PSX)

Reviewed on March 11, 2006

I had this plan for a review, and it was going to be great. See, what I was going to do was write an intro on how I've played an AWESOME point 'n' click game. One so spectacular that I had to write a review on it because not sharing this masterpiece WITH THE WORLD would have made me selfish and possessive. Then I was going to work in a direct link to my Broken Sword review using my limited knowledge of HTML coding. Hohoho.
