X-COM: UFO Defense review (PSX)

Reviewed on February 19, 2009

X-Com gives you quite the daunting task to undertake in saving the entire world from invasion. But despite the many challenges it presents, playing it is an enormously rewarding experience that, even in this day and age, has yet to be truly replicated.

Swagman (PlayStation)

Swagman review (PSX)

Reviewed on February 11, 2009

What a strange combination. An E (everyone from the age of three upwards) rated game, only released in Europe on the PS1 and Saturn, that was developed by CORE as the game they made after the first Tomb Raider enjoyed such phenomenal success. It features eight year old twins who collect bugs (the insect kind), turn into monsters, and when they are not in monster form, try to defeat Scallywags using the doughty weapons of a torch and a yo-yo. They spend much of their time falling into the Abyss a...

Evil Zone (PlayStation)

Evil Zone review (PSX)

Reviewed on February 10, 2009

There is good anime and bad anime, good fighting games and bad fighting games. On the scale, Evil Zone falls somewhere below (way below) Dragon Ball Z in the first category and hovers somewhere to the north west of Smash Brothers in the second.

Nuclear Strike review (PSX)

Reviewed on February 09, 2009

Released for our beloved Playstation 1 console in 97. (10 years already?) This is the best chopper game I've played, but that's not saying much. Not to say the game is bad, but it depends on your taste.

Unbelievable!! Kill cops and aliens (lots), fall off ledges (lots), hear opera music and see Zorg again (a tiny bit).

Spyro 2: Ripto's Rage! (PlayStation)

Spyro 2: Ripto's Rage! review (PSX)

Reviewed on December 06, 2008

There was a time when Spyro games were good. Out of absolutely pure coincidence, this was the same time when Spyro was made by Insomniac, who since moved on to Ratchet and Clank. The original Spyro the Dragon was the start of what would become a hallmark franchise of the PSone platform genre, stripping 3D platforming to its fundamentals and demonstrated how they should be made. A small, cute purple dragon but with an attitude, and, um, fiery breath, how could anyone hate wee Spyro?...

Rampage Through Time (PlayStation)

Rampage Through Time review (PSX)

Reviewed on November 26, 2008

Imagine controlling a giant mutant. You move carelessly from city to city, destroying buildings, eating people, and kicking over cars. The military and police department are both out to stop you, but you won’t let them stand in your way. You continue to “rampage” from city to city, causing as much chaos and destruction as possible with hopes of someday destroying the whole world.

Xenogears (PlayStation)

Xenogears review (PSX)

Reviewed on November 11, 2008

And there were plenty of moments like that throughout the game that kept me wanting to keep playing so the countless number of questions I had could be answered. Why did imperial commander Ramsus have a serious grudge against Fei, considering that Fei seemingly has no clue as to who the man is? Why does Citan (the doctor you visit in the game's beginning) seem to know so much about virtually everything? What is the connection between Fei and the ominously threatening Grahf, who constantly preaches the joys of utter destruction?

Metal Gear Solid (PlayStation)

Metal Gear Solid review (PSX)

Reviewed on November 05, 2008

I have to wonder why the makers of Metal Gear Solid didn’t just make a movie. Here’s a game where the gameplay is never the focus, where interactivity is just a vehicle to get to the next cutscene, where the controller spends more time in your lap than it does in your hands. The best games use interactivity to tell their stories—it is, after all, what separates games from movies. Metal Gear Solid goes in exactly the opposite direction, keeping story and gameplay on opposite sides of a brick wall...

X-COM: Terror from the Deep review (PSX)

Reviewed on November 04, 2008

You start the game with bloody harpoons guns! The only way to close the vast technologic gap between races is to slaughter in mass number, steal the weapons from their corpses, and have your boffins at home make you human-friendly versions.

Metal Gear Solid: VR Missions (PlayStation)

Metal Gear Solid: VR Missions review (PSX)

Reviewed on October 31, 2008

Many series have had spin offs. Few series have had successful spin offs. I'm not sure what it is about Metal Gear that makes it so viable for spin off material. Maybe it's the tongue-in-cheek attitude that Hideo Kojima usually attaches to these side plots. Maybe it's the fact that they aren't really spin offs, but more ad-ons to the main games. Maybe people just really like Snake.

Koudelka (PlayStation)

Koudelka review (PSX)

Reviewed on October 07, 2008

The great thing about Koudelka is the atmosphere and storyline. This is not your typical Japanese RPG with cheery graphics and a cutesy storyline with a bunch of children. This game takes place in a haunted castle in 1898, and you control three characters who not only are adults, but also very mature. It's nice to see that in a RPG for a change. There's also a bunch of great scenes as you really get to see the characters develop, and the main villain is up there with Eve from the Parasite Eve ga...

Tail of the Sun (PlayStation)

Tail of the Sun review (PSX)

Reviewed on September 04, 2008

Tail of the Sun is something I've heard about ever since it was released, but never had the chance to play. However, every time I've read up on it in some magazine, the person seemed to have a hard time explaining how the game works. They would basically describe it as a game about nothing. This bugged me for years, so I finally got a used copy of Tail of the Sun to see just what the hell it's about.

X-COM: Terror from the Deep (PlayStation)

X-COM: Terror from the Deep review (PSX)

Reviewed on August 18, 2008

X-COM 2: Terror from the Deep is the sequel to X-Com: Enemy Unknown (or UFO Defence, depending on your nationality) a follow on that tries to change as little as possible. But when the foundations set are already killer, it's not that big a deal.

Guardian of Darkness (PlayStation)

Guardian of Darkness review (PSX)

Reviewed on July 28, 2008

I don’t think Boo was lying when he told me there were review scores below 5/10. After years of only reviewing games I actually liked, delving into rubbish games territory wasn't the smoothest of transitions. I greatly credit reviewers who are prepared to spend the time just to finish these monstrosities of titles; as I just discovered there was a bloody good reason why I never reviewed bad games in the first place. Labouring through only part of this was a severe test of endurance, will and mot...

Die Hard Trilogy (PlayStation)

Die Hard Trilogy review (PSX)

Reviewed on June 29, 2008

Hey, remember that part in Die Hard when John McClane killed 25 terrorists in the parking garage with a machine-gun and grenades? And what about that moment in Die Harder when you see him completely destroy the airport terminal with just his handgun? That was great. Of course, can't forget about that memorable scene in Die Hard With a Vengeance when John and Zeus crashed into a phone booth to disarm a bomb. Classic.

Bushido Blade 2 (PlayStation)

Bushido Blade 2 review (PSX)

Reviewed on June 22, 2008

In this fighting game from Square(!?), you'll go from one area to another, defeating opponents with one of a few weapons you can pick from. Now, from the sound of that description alone, this sounds like a typical 3D fighting game, like Soul Blade or Tekken, but it's actually quite unique. Neither fighter has a life bar that can be drained away, and both fighters are vulnerable to any attack, so every swing of a weapon can result in instant death. A fight can start, and within seconds, one fight...

Final Fantasy VII (PlayStation)

Final Fantasy VII review (PSX)

Reviewed on June 20, 2008

A pivotal thing happens at the end of the first disc of Final Fantasy VII: Aeris, a central character, is killed by the main villain, who evidently falls out of the sky or something. Such a reveal might be labeled as a major spoiler by some, but seeing as how it’s likely the most widely known plot development of any video game in history amongst the gaming community… Well, if you didn’t know about it, you probably don’t belong on a site like this in the first place.
