Mushroom Men: Rise of the Fungi (DS)

Mushroom Men: Rise of the Fungi review (DS)

Reviewed on January 14, 2009

That, unfortunately, is where Rise of the Fungi’s problems begin. Most significantly, the level designs just don’t work. One could argue that they feature the same amount of platforms and climbable objects as any other game in the genre, but what stands out here is their inability to make things clear. There’s a map displayed on the top screen – or the bottom screen, it loves to flip-flop – but that doesn’t help when a gap is hard to view, when a platform is unusually hard to reach, or when the required task feels impossible to complete due to a technical flaw that only luck can overcome.

Final Fantasy IV (DS)

Final Fantasy IV review (DS)

Reviewed on January 13, 2009

Final Fantasy IV DS is not a new game, nor does it pretend to be original. As with many of Square Enix's re-releases of older titles, it is aimed primarily at the nostalgia factor for those of us who were old enough to play it the first time around (and, were it human, Final Fantasy IV will be old enough to vote next year.) However, even if you didn't play it as a wee small thing back when it was on the Super Nintendo and it was called Final Fantasy II, there's still plenty here for you if you like challenging gameplay and well-executed stories.

Rhapsody: A Musical Adventure (DS)

Rhapsody: A Musical Adventure review (DS)

Reviewed on January 13, 2009

Sugar and spice and all things nice. That's what little girls are made of, and this game might seem as if it has been designed for girls only. The heroine, Cornet, is a horn-playing 16 year old lass who falls in love with a Prince; her constant companion is a pretty doll that speaks, called Kururu; and when she has to fight monsters her main attack spells are made of cake or pancakes! In fact, even the the kingdom of Marl is ruled by a queen, and the story revolves around a witch called Marjoly,...

Theresia (DS)

Theresia review (DS)

Reviewed on January 12, 2009

There are no zombies after your brains, no monsters trying to chop you up, no aliens intent on mass reproduction, and no battles. Yet Theresia is a fascinating (point and click) horror adventure, that kept me playing for hours at a time, until I had uncovered all its secrets and reached the very satisfying ending of two complex stories.

Rhapsody: A Musical Adventure review (DS)

Reviewed on January 08, 2009

Every once in a while, something will come along and completely blow me away and surprise me by its quality. Video games tend to do this every so often, and recently I was witness to this very phenomenon occurring. There was a game released for the Sony Playstation a while back named Rhapsody, a cute strategy RPG game that got by on its musical charm and unique storyline.

TrackMania DS review (DS)

The sulky shot soon turned into a toast. I have no idea how the Scots at Firebrand have managed it, but Trackmania DS is a triumph. I can’t help feel this may have been to spite me.

Chrono Trigger (DS)

Chrono Trigger review (DS)

Reviewed on January 02, 2009

It’s always difficult to cast an objective eye over a game more than a decade old, especially one as celebrated as Chrono Trigger. Nostalgia often has the effect of wearing rose-tinted glasses, but I think this revival on the DS (a full fourteen years later) really does prove Chrono Trigger to be an all-time classic. Ironically, it’s the additional new bonus dungeons and arena mode that leave the most to be desired.

FIFA Soccer 09 (DS)

FIFA Soccer 09 review (DS)

Reviewed on December 30, 2008

Developing football games on the DS used to be like playing both Gerrard and Lampard on the same pitch, never quite worked, and the amount of titles made shows. Gameloft's acclaimed Real Football series stands as its only competitor; the shambolic Pro Evolution Soccer went out with a wimper. FIFA’s typical multi-platform ubiquity can easily be dismissed as another EA style money-spinner, as brand-recognition is a sure sign of sales. But FIFA isn’t the complacent footb...

Guitar Hero: On Tour - Decades review (DS)

Reviewed on December 21, 2008

Organization stands out as the major selling point of Guitar Hero: On Tour - Decades. Traditionally, games from this successful rhythm franchise grouped songs only by difficultly. Weezer would sit right next to Blondie; the Foo Fighters back to back with Boston. Here music is arranged by time period, so you'll find one steaming pile of Fall Out Boy, The All-American Rejects and Paramore rather than stumbling upon them throughout the ga...

From the Abyss review (DS)

Reviewed on December 20, 2008

It’s a worthless way to live. Everyone will tell you otherwise, of course. They’ll say that you’re valiantly defending your homeland. That you’re saving countless innocents for your daily sacrifices. They promise to pay you handsomely for your efforts. But it’s all a sham, a pathetic ploy that appeals to only those foolish enough to believe they’re actually heroes. These warriors put their lives on the line, all in the name of the country of Rubenhaut. But in the end, none of their brave efforts...

Chrono Trigger (DS)

Chrono Trigger review (DS)

Reviewed on December 15, 2008

The best addition to the game proves to be the use of the DS to redesign the menus and controls, and the dual screen functionality which makes viewing the menus a breeze. It might not be much more than a fresh look at the classic, but then fans weren’t really looking for a reinvention.

Ninjatown (DS)

Ninjatown review (DS)

Reviewed on December 15, 2008

Ninja Gaiden? Ninja Raiden? Forget those, this is an entire game about a town of ninjas. Ninjatown takes two things they most probably hadn’t ever expected to see together: cute animated ninjas based on a plush toy line, and the classic idea of a tower defense scenario. If you’re expecting to boot up the game and find bad dialogue and easy levels however, you’d better scoot on back down to your local game store and turn in this game for Resident Evil. Do not let Ninjatown’s cute, pastel flooded ...

Robocalypse (DS)

Robocalypse review (DS)

Reviewed on December 08, 2008

Robocalypse is much easier to grasp than it sounds and includes a very thorough tutorial (interwoven with the first few missions) to ensure that gamers know what they’re doing. The instruction booklet is quite helpful in this regard, as it details almost everything you’ll need to know to get started. And though you can accuse Robocalypse of playing it safe with standard RTS features, the execution is above average for a handheld game.

Ninjatown (DS)

Ninjatown review (DS)

Reviewed on December 08, 2008

Everyone knows about Ninjas. Their infamous reputation precedes them everywhere. If you close your eyes, you can probably picture one in your mind. Clad entirely in black, they're a short, round people with no discernible hands or feet. Their society resides in small, colored huts based on their station and they all survive by eating delicious shuriken-cookies, which also double as a form of currency. ...Wait, what?

Disney's Kim Possible: Kimmunicator (DS)

Disney's Kim Possible: Kimmunicator review (DS)

Reviewed on December 04, 2008

Kim can punch and kick, stringing together ‘combos’ of each attack simply through button mashing. But there are major issues with responsiveness and hit-detection. Sometimes Kim simply will not attack though you think you might be pressing the right button, and other times Kim's punch or kick will execute but miss completely when it appears that it shouldn’t. But you needn’t worry too much; enemy encounters are few and far between. It seems as if there are maybe four enemies in each stage. I’m exaggerating, but not much.

Super Mario 64 DS review (DS)

Reviewed on December 01, 2008

What a surprise. With another portable console by Nintendo come more excuses for them to remake Mario games released on their home consoles with similar hardware specs. With the DS effectively being the portable equivalent of the N64, it’s inevitable we’d see a DS remake of Super Mario 64. But the challenge here was how to grind out some use from that second screen.

Disgaea DS (DS)

Disgaea DS review (DS)

Reviewed on November 26, 2008

It's this trio that quickly become the driving force of Disgaa, be it through Etna's constant sadistic mocking every time Laharl makes a mistake or Flonne's unflagging insistence that both of her new demon friends are basically good people underneath all the mindless slaughtering and evil cackling. Such is the force behind the threesome's interactions that it's all too easy to forget that there's a competent strategy game lurking between all the comic capering.
