Dragon Quest VI: Realms of Revelation (DS)

Dragon Quest VI: Realms of Revelation review (DS)

Reviewed on March 15, 2011

Though Dragon Quest VI features an interesting and surprisingly complex plot, that’s not actually its most impressive accomplishment. The game probably could have done just as well without doing anything interesting with its plot because the real appeal comes from its impressive scope, its ingenuity and its remarkable depth.

Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey (DS)

Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey review (DS)

Reviewed on March 09, 2011

Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey is something of a departure from Atlus's more recent first-party titles: it is very unlike Persona 3 and Persona 4. It is relatively light on plot (and named characters), and instead is much more focused on being a good old-fashioned dungeon crawler. Fans of Nocturne will feel right at home.

Dragon Quest Heroes: Rocket Slime (DS)

Dragon Quest Heroes: Rocket Slime review (DS)

Reviewed on February 23, 2011

You just know that they have a story. I mean, they have to! There’s about a million of them! For every Goomba or similar cannon fodder video game bad guy that just puts on the uniform and goes to work, hating its life, there’s a guy like Rocket who I would suspect loves to go up against some knight trying to save the world from the Evil Lord So-and-So.

Jake Hunter: Detective Chronicles (DS)

Jake Hunter: Detective Chronicles review (DS)

Reviewed on January 08, 2011

Oh, boy. Jake Hunter wants so bad to be a cool film noir private eye. He's got the crappy one-man agency, the staff of exactly one perky secretary always bringing coffee, the no-nonsense attitude, the penchant for smoking (Marlboros. He’s very clear on that. Did Marlboro fund this game? “I had to think about the case, so I lit up a smooth, relaxing, non-filtered Marlboro. Mm, yeah, sweet.”). All he needs is a trenchcoat/fedora combo and a Max Payne-level of similes and he’d be good to go.

Final Fantasy: The 4 Heroes of Light (DS)

Final Fantasy: The 4 Heroes of Light review (DS)

Reviewed on January 05, 2011

Rumors spread that this was going to be a reboot of the original 1987 Final Fantasy for the NES because of its western title and Square Enix's insistence that it would be a "throw back" to the days of 8-bit role playing games. Others thought it would be a remake of the 1991 Gameboy title "Final Fantasy Adventure" because of its Japanese subtitle "Final Fantasy Gaiden". Others still believed it would be a rehashing of another Gameboy title, "Final Fantasy Legend". All these rumors proved to be fa...

101-in-1 Sports Megamix review (DS)

Reviewed on November 16, 2010

Tennis’ failure doesn’t detract from every game, and you could argue that when given such a large number of sports to partake in, there’s always going to be some duds, and you’re always going to be able to skip over some events and still have enough points locked away to attempt everything. The problem is that there are too many mini-games that play out like the failures than there are the successes.

Etrian Odyssey III: The Drowned City (DS)

Etrian Odyssey III: The Drowned City review (DS)

Reviewed on September 19, 2010

As you venture through the unknown environments, you'll find points where it's possible to harvest, mine or just snatch up items that you can take back with you to town and possibly turn into new armor and weapons at the local city's single shop. So there's that element prodding you to actually explore (instead of simply walking circles in close proximity to a staircase) and there's the realization that at some point, you're going to have to actually plot your way into the darkness or you'll never find the next staircase and the next boss. The likelihood that said boss will summarily demolish you upon contact is really beside the point.

Picross 3D (DS)

Picross 3D review (DS)

Reviewed on June 06, 2010

You basically just knock blocks around with your stylus and hope that you hit the right ones so that you can keep chipping away at a mass of blocks and turn them into a three-dimensional image of a flower or a butterfly or some guy walking through a doorway or whatever else. It doesn't sound exciting—and it isn't—and it doesn't sound engaging... but it is.

Jewel Quest Mysteries: Curse of the Emerald Tear (DS)

Jewel Quest Mysteries: Curse of the Emerald Tear review (DS)

Reviewed on May 31, 2010

As things stand, there absolutely no reason to recommend this over any of the other Jewel Quest entries already out there. By picking up an older version, you are spared from inclusions that lessen the overall effect and get the experience the game as it should have been kept.

Pokémon SoulSilver Version (DS)

Pokémon SoulSilver Version review (DS)

Reviewed on May 24, 2010

I ran out and bought Pokémon SoulSilver on launch day, and it sucks that I have to describe this course of action as having “caved.” I liked it when I was able to purchase these games without feeling ashamed of myself.

AGAIN: Interactive Crime Novel (DS)

AGAIN: Interactive Crime Novel review (DS)

Reviewed on April 24, 2010

Again is the latest (and maybe last) interactive novel game from Cing, the developers of Trace Memory and Hotel Dusk. Such a pedigree makes this game even more disappointing than it otherwise would be.

Let's Draw! (DS)

Let's Draw! review (DS)

Reviewed on April 24, 2010

Let's Draw! includes a variety of fun shapes, too, things that kids would actually care to draw. You can start out simple just by drawing a few lines—and the game will congratulate you on your artistic prowess—then move up to something more complex like a proper circle or a bicycle or one of several types of dinosaur. The folks who made the game clearly knew their audience and worked to keep them happy and engaged.

SBK: Snowboard Kids review (DS)

Reviewed on April 17, 2010

In our modern society today, life has become too urbanised: you get up in the morning in the inner city or suburb, ready yourself with a breakfast and a shower, and then commute for upwards of an hour or higher so you can continue your struggle in the rat race that is life. Sometimes you just need to kick back and find something to distract you, whether it be an internal process such as meditation or external entertainment like watching sports on TV.

Nostalgia (DS)

Nostalgia review (DS)

Reviewed on April 10, 2010

It’s nice to just pick up an RPG that doesn’t have you sitting through hours of pretentious dribble about how Villain X used to be valiant and brave until Fate stepped in and cock-slapped them, and play it.

Lock's Quest (DS)

Lock's Quest review (DS)

Reviewed on April 08, 2010

One normally would not equate being an engineer or an architech with having a 'fun, eventful career'. While both certainly make lots of money and still do field work, they also tend to be fairly droll overall, consisting mostly of long-term projects in which technical detail has to be redone/redrawn and refined over and over again and adjustments need to be made over the course of a project in progress. I should know: my sister is an engineer.

World Cup Of Pool (DS)

World Cup Of Pool review (DS)

Reviewed on March 31, 2010

Unfortunately, the inclusion of sixty stellar pros boils down to displaying a still photo before each match, because the computer certainly doesn't play like any of those big names. It fails to execute smart safeties. It will ignore tailor-made combinations that would result in a win. Worst of all, it simply flubs easy, straight-in shots. I've never seen it come close to running a rack.

Dragon Ball Z: Attack of the Saiyans (DS)

Dragon Ball Z: Attack of the Saiyans review (DS)

Reviewed on February 25, 2010

Dragon Ball Z: Attack of the Saiyans is a funny game - at a time when Toei Animation has begun broadcasting Dragon Ball Kai, a remastered version of Dragon Ball Z with the number of episodes cut down from 29 to approximately 100, Attack of the Saiyans actually increases the amount of storyline proper. Stretching from the end of the 23rd Tenkaichi Budokai (World Martial Arts Tournament) from the Dragon Ball series up to the climatic Goku vs. Vegeta fight in the titular Saiyan...

Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel (DS)

Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel review (DS)

Reviewed on February 14, 2010

What The Squeakquel brings to the table is nothing new; we've all seen rhythm games in the past in the form of games such as Rock Band, Guitar Hero and even Dance Dance Revolution. Alvin's latest outing comes closest to the last of those three and consists of gameplay where the player must do nothing more than use the stylus to match on-screen arrows, but that's where the similarities between the two titles end.

Hello Kitty Party (DS)

Hello Kitty Party review (DS)

Reviewed on February 10, 2010

Hello Kitty Party is a collection of twenty five mini-games featuring the wide cast of Sanrio’s cute-troop. Whoever your favorite Sanrio character is, whether it’s green Keroppi or the titular Hello Kitty, there’s a game that features them. Unfortunately, in this case it’s like having your favorite childhood characters feature in a sweat shop. The games are mindless and repetitive and require little to no participation on the player’s part except the ability to briefly touch a stylus to a screen.
