Heroes of Mana review (DS)Reviewed on December 21, 2007It's been proven time and time again that Square-Enix cannot make anything that isn't a Final Fantasy style RPG. They had Ergheiz, the horrid FF-based attempt by Square to make a fighting game. They had Final Fantasy Tactics Advance, where 99% of the fun value was drawing bad MSPaint comics portraying Marche as a villain. And now, finally, Square releases a third abortion, based off Secret of Mana and it's sequel. Heroes of Mana is at best Starcraft with a thin Squaresoft shell over it. At worst... |

Naruto: Path of the Ninja review (DS)Reviewed on December 19, 2007If you are not a Naruto fan, allow me to explain some of the premise behind it: a young hyperactive ninja named Naruto Uzumaki wants to claim the title of Hokage, which would make him the greatest ninja in his village of Konohogakure. In doing so, he becomes part of a three-man rookie squad lead by a jonin, an elite ninja, who go on various missions to earn money for the village’s economy and increase their own skills. One of young Naruto’s first missions brings him face-to-face with a philosoph... |

Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney - Trials and Tribulations review (DS)Reviewed on December 18, 2007Phoenix Wright just can't seem to catch a break. Not even a year after the second game in the fan-favorite lawyer series was released, Wright returns in what is his strongest game yet. The third installment, Phoenix Wright: Trials and Tribulations, is a fantastic conclusion to the trilogy that fans of the series will love. |

Picross DS review (DS)Reviewed on December 18, 2007Picross is a surprisingly veteran puzzle series, one that has spanned Nintendo consoles since the days of the Game Boy and SNES, and has now touched down on the DS under the guise of the Touch Generations series for the system. With the uncontrolled explosion of crossword and sudoku titles for the handheld, can Picross provide enough incentive for gamers to pick up, learn and adore yet another puzzle game? Do the DS features give it enough reason for existing fans to invest time and money into a... |

Contra 4 review (DS)Reviewed on December 17, 2007Contra 4 is probably the hardest game I've ever wanted to review. On one hand, it's incredibly stupid to dock a game points for being too hard - case in point, the infamous case of an IGN staff member that gave God Hand a 3/10 because he set the difficulty too high and the game kicked his ass. Yet, in this case, it's the difficulty that keeps Contra 4 from being anywhere near as good as Contra 3 was. |

Avatar: The Last Airbender - The Burning Earth review (DS)Reviewed on December 13, 2007For example, The Burning Earth picks up right after a large battle against the Fire Nation and has Aang and his two compatriots, Sokka and Katara, off to train in the ways of Earthbending. If this last sentence read like a foreign language, Avatar: The Last Airbender - The Burning Earth is not the game for you (unless you have a child, cousin, niece or nephew under the age of 10 to explain things). |

Left Brain Right Brain review (DS)Reviewed on December 10, 2007After you've completed a set of exercises, the game will present a handy little chart that shows where you've proven your skills lie. Both left and right hand are rated, so you can see what difference there really is. For the most part, that's the hook behind the whole game. You're essentially playing just another Brain Age clone, only this one actually has a unique purpose that helps it stand apart from the crowded field of peers. |

Mega Man ZX review (DS)Reviewed on December 08, 2007If there is one word that can sum up the ongoing Mega Man series, it's "consistent". The series has spawned many games over the years and it consists of a few sub-series like the classic series, the X series and the Zero series. It has also been a very consistent series in many ways. First of all, the quality of the games is usually on a high level concerning action-platformers, bar a few. Second, the series is also known for its very consistent approach in its core gameplay... |

Jam Sessions review (DS)Reviewed on December 08, 2007...and using Jam Sessions, you'll become a (sort of) master at playing Guitar. Jam Sessions is pretty good if your looking to play chords on the guitar with cool effects, but it doesn't really go much further than that, and you can't play melodies and individual strings. |

Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix review (DS)Reviewed on December 08, 2007You should be skeptical of almost any game that is based on any form of popular entertainment. Be it a new game version of your favourite gameshow, or a game-version of the latest Hollywood blockbuster. Chances are, it'll be a rapidly assembled game with no innovation nor fun at all. This is entirely true in the case of Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix. Never before have I played a tie-in game that has reached such heights of unplayability. I don't know what annoys me more: the fact tha... |

Hotel Dusk: Room 215 review (DS)Reviewed on December 07, 2007Take the essence of Phoenix Wright (or for those of you who have experience with Japanese games, a so-called "play novel"). Add in backgrounds done by what look like Team Silent during the time they made Silent Hill 1, and some film noir ripoff graphics ala Max Payne. This is what makes up the game called Hotel Dusk - Room 215. In some ways, it's unique and different. In others, it's exceptionally repetitive and boring. |

WordJong review (DS)Reviewed on December 07, 2007The change actually makes for a much more interesting experience, since your mind is now put to the test a bit more. There often will be a few options available, so your job is to figure out which will do the most to help your score. For example, why settle for 'cede' if the letters for 'succeed' happen to be available? |

Draglade review (DS)Reviewed on December 04, 2007You can choose from four characters. Each has a separate plot, but they all go through the same checkpoints. Once you've finished one tale, the only reason to brave the massive amount of recycled material is the character you'll unlock for versus mode. From locations to bosses to key events, almost nothing is utilized only once. This probably isn't a huge surprise and it wouldn't even be so bad except that there are only a few places to visit in the whole game! |

Mega Man ZX Advent review (DS)Reviewed on December 03, 2007Most people stopped liking Megaman at X3. There was X4, which was painfully mediocre. X5 - X9, all of which were horrid abortions of games. There was the Megaman Zero series on the Gameboy Advance, all of which were either unplayably difficult or the same boss fight rehashed a billion times. There was Command Mission, which was mediocre at best. There was the Battle Network series, of which the first one was decent (if repetitive) and the rest were rehashed. There were Legends and Legends 2, whi... |

Cooking Mama 2: Dinner with Friends review (DS)Reviewed on December 01, 2007Sit back, let the timer run out, and you will still end up with a perfectly presentable dish and one of 68 new recipes for your lack of effort. Doing well gets a good score, but I’m not really the kind of guy who calls up friends to brag about my delightfully moist, and let’s not forget virtual, chocolate cake. |

The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass review (DS)Reviewed on December 01, 2007Things starts how they always start in the Zelda multiverse, with the kidnapping of that dappy bint of a princess whose only point of existence is to be spirited away by dark forces at the start of every new adventure. In a new development twist for the series, Phantom Hourglass is a direct sequel from Wind Waker on the Gamecube, meaning that it inherits the THE BIG TWO flaws that chapter suffered from |

The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass review (DS)Reviewed on November 30, 2007My professional obligations completed, I forgot about Hourglass. It's easily done because, as I alluded to earlier, it's crap. But now, bollocks to it, I'm going to tell you why. |

Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker review (DS)Reviewed on November 27, 2007Just as the upgrade and customization features abolished everything Pokemon has shown us in the past five years, DQM scores another point for monster synthesis. You could literally spend hours testing monster combinations and still have only scratched the surface. |

WWE SmackDown vs. Raw 2008 review (DS)Reviewed on November 26, 2007WWE Smackdown Vs Raw 2008 delivers the first DS wrestling game ever and the first 3D wrestling game for a Nintendo handheld. Unfortunately, the action is truly limited to a 2D form. Instead of controlling wrestlers with a control layout similar to Smackdown 2: Know Your Role, you perform moves by tapping buttons on the touch screen. For example, you can tap a quick attack icon or a powerful attack icon, then swipe or spin your stylus in the direction requested. It’s rather fun, but doesn’t a... |

Strawberry Shortcake: The Four Seasons Cake review (DS)Reviewed on November 25, 2007Of course, whether or not little girls are ready to solve some of the challenges here is a matter that's up for some debate. There's nothing particularly taxing until right near the end, but at the same time, sometimes the answer might not be clear. Believe it or not, the game eventually gets rather rough and actually requires a bit of platforming skill. |
