Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith (PlayStation 2)

Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith review (PS2)

Reviewed on July 16, 2006

Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith is the cash-in game derived from the final addition to the George Lucas movie series, which uses the story and characters from the movie in an action-adventure setting. It’s disappointing to find out that the quality of recent Star Wars games, like Battlefront II and the Knights of the Old Republic series, don’t come with the name, causing Revenge of the Sith to be a brutal experience. At its core, it’s nothing but a bland, mindless, and pointless butt...

Street Fighter Alpha Anthology (PlayStation 2)

Street Fighter Alpha Anthology review (PS2)

Reviewed on July 16, 2006

Once upon a time, Street Fighter II dominated the gaming world. If you had any interest in the fighting genre during the last decade, this legendary brawler had the power to grab your attention, keep your eyes glued to the screen, and play an untold amount of hours against friends and computer-controlled enemies alike. There were tournaments to win, characters to master, and plenty of other in-game aspects that made this fighter pure bliss. However, Street Fighter II couldn’t hold ...

Tomb Raider: Legend (PlayStation 2)

Tomb Raider: Legend review (PS2)

Reviewed on July 15, 2006

After Angel of Darkness disappointed thousands of Tomb Raider fans with its clunky controls and uninspired action, most did not know what to think when Legend was announced. The earlier Tomb Raider games were so exciting and adventurous, that their sequels seemed to fall into a shadow. After Tomb Raider III and Angel of Darkness, the series began to lose the popularity and fan base that it once possessed. However, Legend attempts to revive the series by bringing back the fresh and entertaining g...

Shadow of the Colossus (PlayStation 2)

Shadow of the Colossus review (PS2)

Reviewed on July 13, 2006

With the release of ICO in 2001, a hidden gem emerged out of nowhere. With the game mainly consisting of escorting a young lady around with various puzzles and little combat, the word that may come to the mind of some is “boring.” But this is not true. It was a truly original concept, and it showed that not everything needs to be about blowing away enemies in first person shooters or managing an army in strategy games. This has been carried over to Shadow of the Colossus, with many characteristi...

The Hobbit (PlayStation 2)

The Hobbit review (PS2)

Reviewed on July 09, 2006

Bilbo Baggins, as many of us know, is a typical hobbit. He’s portly, laid-back, and perfectly content with never leaving Hobbiton. However, due to his recruitment by a wise wizard and a bunch of dwarves, Bilbo sets out on a quest where he encounters some awkward camera angles, many boring stages, and a final couple levels that hint at what could have been a much better game. So much for the epic journey I expected.

Guitar Hero (PlayStation 2)

Guitar Hero review (PS2)

Reviewed on July 08, 2006

The life of a rock star: full of money, alcohol, and all out partying. Guitar Hero may not be able to provide the fun of passing out drunk on the floor, but it certainly captures the feel of rock in a video game. With all kinds of musical tracks and one of the coolest gaming peripherals, Guitar Hero makes you feel like you’re on that stage, with thousands of screaming fans going crazy. Well, as long as you don’t look at yourself in the mirror. Anyone who is willing to fork over the extra $20 wil...

Naruto: Ultimate Ninja (PlayStation 2)

Naruto: Ultimate Ninja review (PS2)

Reviewed on July 07, 2006

Taken as a pure brawler, Ultimate Ninja no doubt comes up wanting. There’s only one attack button. None of the fighters have that many attacks and combos, fifteen at the most. Every characters has specific moves, and some of the hidden characters have range and power advantages, but everyone does similar damage and moves alike; master one ninja and you’ve mastered them all. Topping that all off, everyone’s either extremely weak or extremely durable; it takes a ridiculous amount of time to win relying on straight-up fighting. All the more reason to not take this as a pure brawler.

Disgaea: Hour of Darkness (PlayStation 2)

Disgaea: Hour of Darkness review (PS2)

Reviewed on July 06, 2006

At a glance, Disgaea: Hour of Darkness looks like your standard strategy RPG: turn-based battles on a grid, a variety of weapons and classes, a small amount of customization. But from the first time you meet the main character, you know that you’re in for a very unusual trip.

God of War (PlayStation 2)

God of War review (PS2)

Reviewed on July 06, 2006

There are two things that are good about this game. Sadly, they are the two things that are good about every “good” game. Usually, these two things make up the bulk a review but I didn’t write this review intending to tell you that this is a fun game and is looks good, blah, blah, woof, woof. In the grander scheme of video-game things, God of War is a big failure. It makes all the same mistakes concerning content that every other high-ranked game does. It’s offensive, it’s hyper-masculine, it m...

Suikoden V (PlayStation 2)

Suikoden V review (PS2)

Reviewed on June 23, 2006

Suikoden V takes place in the Queendom of Falena, a magical land where bunnies with knives attack innocent travelers and giant, marauding werewolves drop 200 skill points when they die. It’s called a Queendom because the Queen rules just like a king would, the king is just the commander of the army, and the Prince has no real power or anything because the king is always decided by a tournament he can’t even participate in. So, basically, Prince [Insert Your Name Here], is the equivalent of a Princess. Which explains why he looks like a girl. I guess.

Metal Saga (PlayStation 2)

Metal Saga review (PS2)

Reviewed on June 09, 2006

I had no reason to go anywhere other than to get in fights and earn money to buy better equipment for my characters and their tanks. With no motivation beyond personal gain, everything I accomplished in Metal Saga seemed hollow — a never-ending series of frivolous events only connected by their lack of connection.

Fight Night Round 3 (PlayStation 2)

Fight Night Round 3 review (PS2)

Reviewed on June 05, 2006

Fighting without the energy bar, with no concrete way to gauge my opponents health and stamina, has made this game one of the most intense experiences I’ve ever had on any console; it’s amazing on multiple levels. The opponent’s body becomes your gauge; you’re targeting him, picking out spots, centering, focusing your attacks, faking him, looking to make sure he hurts in one spot more than the others. You land a solid blow and it hits with all the subtlety of roaring thunder; the controller shakes, the screen shakes, blood spurts from his mouth, you can feel the ribs give way as your fist connects.

King of Fighters: Maximum Impact (PlayStation 2)

King of Fighters: Maximum Impact review (PS2)

Reviewed on June 03, 2006

Once upon a time, the Street Fighter series was the greatest thing to happen to the fighting game genre. There was a massive roster of incredibly popular characters, a wide variety of special moves, and some of the best competitive gameplay ever seen. But for all of the success that the Street Fighter genre garnered with each passing year, there was only one other series in Japan that rivaled its awesomeness: The King of Fighters. There were no sumo wrestlers, Indian Yoga disciples, Sonic Booms,...

Do you have a job? If not, you will eventually. Assuming that you’re not going to mooch off your parents for the rest of your life, you’ll have to face the harsh reality of the working world someday. If you manage to finish your college education, your degree may help land you a job in a reasonably professional environment…W...
