Metal Slug 6 (PlayStation 2)

Metal Slug 6 review (PS2)

Reviewed on December 20, 2007

Metal Slug has had a prominent position in the history of arcade gaming over the last ten years. From Metal Slug 1, which was one of the opening titles for the Neo-Geo arcade hardware, to Metal Slug 5, which was one of the final titles for the dying Geo, Metal Slug has always been associated with the classic arcade feel of having to spend two thirds of your pocket money attempting to finish it. Metal Slug has survived for over ten years and three different owners. First, there was SNK, which mad...

Aeon Flux (PlayStation 2)

Aeon Flux review (PS2)

Reviewed on December 17, 2007

I have studied the histories, and the moral of the Aeon Flux videogame saga is apparently this: There's nothing like the advent of a spin-off film starring Charlize Theron for getting things done when it comes to turning a super-crazy sci-fi animation into a videogame.

Echo Night: Beyond (PlayStation 2)

Echo Night: Beyond review (PS2)

Reviewed on December 05, 2007

Outside the mainstream there's a tradition of slow, simply made horror-adventure games whose gameplay has barely developed for a decade or more. These are the D's, the Notes, the Hellnights, the Echo Nights, etc. The raw stuff of Echo Night Beyond (ENB) is nothing that an original Playstation or something even older couldn't run, but this is a genre where atmosphere goes a long way, and ENB does generate a detailed, restrained outer space creepiness befitting the PS2's graphical capabilities. Th...

Luxor: Pharaoh's Challenge (PlayStation 2)

Luxor: Pharaoh's Challenge review (PS2)

Reviewed on November 29, 2007

If you've played a lot of puzzle games besides Tetris, you've probably encountered one where your goal is to stop colored marbles from rolling too far along a winding track. This is typically accomplished by tossing a few marbles of your own so that three of a single color end up next to each other, flash and then disappear. Sometimes, a chain reaction is possible, with multiple groups vanishing at once. Sound familiar?

MVP 07 NCAA Baseball (PlayStation 2)

MVP 07 NCAA Baseball review (PS2)

Reviewed on November 25, 2007

MVP 06’s greatest sin was one of omission. In 2006, 285 teams populated the ranks of Division I baseball, yet only 128 squads from the most high profile conferences found their way into the inaugural NCAA Baseball release. And many of the slighted schools deserved representation; 31 of them earned a berth in that postseason’s field of 64. While an industrious player could recreate the target of his fanaticism, there was no way to accurately model uniforms, logos, or mascots. To...

Wild Arms 5 (PlayStation 2)

Wild Arms 5 review (PS2)

Reviewed on November 18, 2007

If ever there were an argument for the existence of the silent protagonist in an RPG, Wild Arms V's main character Dean would be it. Whereas most RPGs will have characters with at least a handful of surprising lines, Wild Arms V seems content in making Dean feel as generic as possible. He's a carefree, naive young man with a female best friend that's too good for him and always insults him for being a moron.

Mercenaries: Playground of Destruction review (PS2)

Reviewed on November 16, 2007

Though at first glance Mercenaries "Playground of Destruction” seems like a GTA clone but in fact it is not. Mercenaries is an original game and a VERY enjoyable game.

Burnout 3: Takedown review (PS2)

Reviewed on November 16, 2007

Burnout 3 though the 3rd installment in the burnout series is not like its predecessors, the reason being that Criterion Games has completely reinvented the series and everything that was associated with the Burnout world.

Legaia 2: Duel Saga (PlayStation 2)

Legaia 2: Duel Saga review (PS2)

Reviewed on November 16, 2007

As a fan of the original Legend of Legaia, I was pleasantly surprised to find this gem while fishing through the bargain bin of my local game store. I was unaware that there even was a sequel, but then, Legaia has always been more of an underground fandom, and like its predecessor, Legaia 2 came on the scene without fanfare or lineups and humbly presented itself to us.

Aqua Teen Hunger Force: Zombie Ninja Pro-Am (PlayStation 2)

Aqua Teen Hunger Force: Zombie Ninja Pro-Am review (PS2)

Reviewed on November 15, 2007

To win the game, you must progress through twelve levels. Each is sandwiched between brief but amusing cutscenes featuring voices provided by the people responsible for the TV series. The cinema sequences set things up nicely as the trio of heroes advances from one stage to the next, but don't really hide the fact that the fun diminishes significantly once you actually start playing. That's because with the exception of a tutorial and three racing events, every stage unfolds the same way.

Manhunt 2 (PlayStation 2)

Manhunt 2 review (PS2)

Reviewed on November 15, 2007

It would be inaccurate to call Manhunt 2 a true sequel to the original ultra violent and ultra gory Manhunt, because even though the latest game carries the same name it tells a whole different story with a completely different character. Developed by Rockstar London Manhunt 2 takes the violence, gore and profanity that the developers are famous for to a whole new intense level and makes sure it stays there.

Brunswick Pro Bowling (PlayStation 2)

Brunswick Pro Bowling review (PS2)

Reviewed on November 02, 2007

Unfortunately, Brunswick Pro Bowling is hard to recommend to anyone, even the most hardcore bowling fan. Although the bowling mechanics are decent and there is a wealth of licensed Brunswick gear, they in no way balance the negatives. The lack of game modes and uninspired audiovisual design is a disaster; you’d be better of spending your money elsewhere.

Guitar Hero Encore: Rocks the 80s (PlayStation 2)

Guitar Hero Encore: Rocks the 80s review (PS2)

Reviewed on October 27, 2007

The original Guitar Hero’s release in 2005 achieved mass commercial and critical success, almost single-handedly reviving the rhythm game genre. Although the companies behind the phenomenon, Harmonix and RedOctane, have now parted company, their last collaboration is now with us. Guitar Hero Encore: Rocks the 80s is a collection of thirty tracks from the decade; the song list is a bit hit-and-miss, but the real disappointment is the lack of value and lazy presentation.

Final Fantasy XII (PlayStation 2)

Final Fantasy XII review (PS2)

Reviewed on October 25, 2007

The original Final Fantasy launched in December of 1987 in Japan, and was expected to be SquareSoft’s swan song. Twenty years and a merger later, Square-Enix’s Final Fantasy has become one of the most successful and inappropriately named franchises in gaming history. As the Playstation 2 enters its final months, Square-Enix’s Final Fantasy XII is undoubtedly one of the biggest games at the tail-end of the PS2’s life. A significant switch in tone and game play provides the series with a breath of...

Guilty Gear XX: Accent Core review (PS2)

Reviewed on October 10, 2007

Heaven or Hell? What’s it going to be, pal? You’ve got thirty seconds to choose. You going to go the good-natured paladin, or are you going to go with that flame-spouting anti-hero? How about the woman with the sentient hair? No? What about that aristocratic vampire? Not your style, eh? How about the swashbuckling womanizer, or the prepubescent pirate girl that’s pining after him? That veiled assassin with the pool cue looks like fun, too. Look at that ten-foot monster draped in a doctors coat, ...

Underworld (PlayStation 2)

Underworld review (PS2)

Reviewed on October 10, 2007

Yes, they made a game about the movie Underworld. According to all sources it was released exclusively in Europe in January 2004, and it received no media coverage whatsoever. There’s not a single word about this game in IGN, Gamespot, GameFAQs or even this site, apart from the purely technical data like the fact that it actually exists or who distributed it. If I found this game myself it was only because it was being sold (obscenely cheap, by the way) in some obscure game shop I happene...

Grand Theft Auto: Vice City Stories (PlayStation 2)

Grand Theft Auto: Vice City Stories review (PS2)

Reviewed on September 30, 2007

It's the game that let us release the evil hoodlum inside us. And now we have the 5th available for the Playsation 2. And like the 4th, it's a port of a PSP game. We go back to the year 1984, and we revisit Vice City, a place I know all too well from playing the original game so many times that I can memorize the cutscenes word for word. Seriously! Vice City was my personal favourite, so of course I had high expectations for it's "prequel". And how does it fare? Not too shabby.

.hack//G.U. Vol. 3: Redemption review (PS2)

Reviewed on September 28, 2007

This game is relatively fun, if you bought this game and started with this game. If you started with .Hack//G.U. Vol 1: Rebirth or .Hack//G.U. Vol. 2: Reminisce, then you are just sticking it out for the story, aren't ya? Well, this game is certainly balanced, but it depends on how you look at it.

Gundam Battle Assault 3: Featuring Mobile Suit Gundam Seed review (PS2)

Reviewed on September 27, 2007

I'm gonna be honest with ya, straight out. If you're the kind of person that's critical for a game for its mechanics, graphics, story plot, etc etc, or a competitive fighter gamer then this game is absolutely HORRIBLE. Shoot yourself for even considering. If you ever have or will. If you're like me, who just doesn't give a crap that much about the specs of a fighter game and just out to have fun and waste time, then, MAYBE you'll enjoy this game.

Soul Nomad & The World Eaters (PlayStation 2)

Soul Nomad & The World Eaters review (PS2)

Reviewed on September 25, 2007

Soul Nomad, much like Phantom Brave before it, tries very hard to tell a serious story while also purveying the jokes that it assumes Nippon Ichi fans can’t live without. The result is a game that lurches awkwardly from dramatic to goofy moments, and often expects the audience to laugh at characters who are about to do or experience something legitimately horrifying (to the tune of genocide, infanticide, or rape, as the case may be).
