Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne (PlayStation 2)

Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne review (PS2)

Reviewed on April 03, 2008

The night is that time of demons. The title screen is a shadowed navy background filled with various creatures. Their eyes glow different colors as your hero stands faced towards them. He appears small and insignificant compared to the fiends loitering the area, but his back bares the glowing stripes that show his demi-fiend nature. After a pause with the cast of figures, the logo reveals itself from top to bottom in the matter of a moment. It reads ‘Nocturne’ in large red letters, and Shin...

Mana Khemia: Alchemists of Al-Revis review (PS2)

Reviewed on April 01, 2008

Mana Khemia: Alchemists of Al-Revis is Gust's attempt at a fresh RPG, and while not all of its new ideas are home-runs, it’s still an engaging and worthwhile adventure for fans.

Unreal Tournament review (PS2)

Consider UT’s enviable balance. Imagine a map where beginners can seek rocket launchers to run amok, while pros can deign to gun them down armed with only a pair of pistols.

El Tigre: The Adventures of Manny Rivera (PlayStation 2)

El Tigre: The Adventures of Manny Rivera review (PS2)

Reviewed on March 20, 2008

I say that because there's simply not much reason to play through the adventure multiple times. There aren't any hidden items to scrounge up, there aren't any alternate routes and there aren't even any particularly memorable moments throughout the whole affair. You can choose to play through as either Frida or Black Cuervo, as mentioned on the back of the box, but they both control identically and the option doesn't add anything to the experience.

Disgaea 2: Cursed Memories (PlayStation 2)

Disgaea 2: Cursed Memories review (PS2)

Reviewed on February 28, 2008

What comes to mind when mechanical penguin monsters say “dood,” a bipolar talking frog with a French accent addresses you as “Monsieur Napoleon Bonerhard,” or when the Rainbow Prism Rangers are willing to come to your aid with a simple cell phone call? Well, you’re either on some illegal substance, or you’re playing Disgaea. A few years ago, Nippon Ichi brought us the first game Disgaea: Hour of Darkness, which proved that tactical strategy RPGs are still cool, and it also had a wacky storyline....

Shadow Hearts From the New World review (PS2)

Reviewed on February 28, 2008

Remember the year 1929, all kinds of horrible things happened back then. We just got out of World War I, prohibition of alcohol became a law, and worst of all, women’s suffrage was realized a few years ago. Not to mention in a couple of years the stock market will crash and the nation’s economy will be screwed until FDR comes to save the day. In the midst of this, strange monsters are appearing through dimensional rifts and in general, hell is breaking loose. While most RPG’s are useful for Engl...

Cold Fear (PlayStation 2)

Cold Fear review (PS2)

Reviewed on February 26, 2008

The phrase 'Resident Evil on a boat' has cropped up more than once over time to describe particular survival horror games. Whether you find the phrase cute, pithy or dispassionately accurate when applied, the trouble is that the handful of games attracting this description have yet to bring enough new stuff to the table (apart from the boat) or to do the old stuff as well as the bedrock titles did it, to be able to escape from their shadow. Cold Fear is excellent in its boatiness, perhaps the ze...

Odin Sphere review (PS2)

Reviewed on February 19, 2008

Atlus has always been known for it's unique games, games based on concepts and game play that the larger companies would never touch-at least, not until someone like Atlus made the concept successful first. Atlus has brought us many of these surprises in past, and I can guarantee that anyone calling themselves a fan of action, strategy or RPG games has at least one Atlus game sitting on their shelf and I can assure you that Disgaea: Hour of Darkness will always have a place in my collection and ...

Taito Legends 2 review (PS2)

Reviewed on February 13, 2008

A Taito shooter showcase would not be complete without representation from the Darius series of shooters. The side-scrolling fish-featured mainstay makes two welcome appearances here: in the shmup fan favourite Darius Gaiden, beloved for its balance, and the ostentatious bullet storm that is G-Darius, beloved for its excess.

Nobunaga's Ambition: Rise to Power review (PS2)

Reviewed on February 05, 2008

This is a strategy game for people who love strategy games. The amount of depth and complexity here is pretty much unparalleled, and the sheer quantity of menus, statistics, and text will doubtlessly scare off a lot of players.

Tales of Legendia (PlayStation 2)

Tales of Legendia review (PS2)

Reviewed on January 31, 2008

Now, if I wanted to use a bit of tactics, I’d hit the O along with the directional pad to use one of Senel’s special attacks. And if I REALLY wanted to go overboard, I’d program a magic-user’s healing spell to either the L2 or R2 button and personally dictate when they regenerated everyone’s life. And if forcing one character to CONSTANTLY cure everyone didn’t make even the toughest boss fights pathetically easy, well, there’s Climax Mode.

MX vs ATV Untamed (PlayStation 2)

MX vs ATV Untamed review (PS2)

Reviewed on January 27, 2008

There seem to be scores of cookie-cutter ATV racing games to choose from these days, all of them involving taking the four-wheelers through winding, bumpy courses, endeavouring to both win races and earn big points for pulling stunts along the way. Untamed adds motorbikes (and a few other novelty vehicles) to the mix, in the hopes of spicing things up.

Sega Genesis Collection review (PS2)

Reviewed on January 25, 2008

I especially appreciated the wonderful Ristar, one of my favourite Genesis games, which I was unable to unlock in the Sonic Mega Collection, despite doing what was ostensibly necessary to unlock it. The little star-bodied mascot with the rubber arms is as entertaining as ever, clutching enemies and slam-dancing them to death amidst the most colourful of environs the Genesis ever saw.

The King of Fighters XI (PlayStation 2)

The King of Fighters XI review (PS2)

Reviewed on January 03, 2008

Power. That’s all it’s really about, isn’t it? Never mind the wealth. Forget the glory. The King of Fighters tournaments have and always will be a struggle for power. Some want it for good. Others want it for evil. Then there are guys like Ash Crimson. He’s out to steal the mystical flames of Kusanagi and Yagami Clans. Now that the tournament is starting up again, he’s got his sights set on Kyo and Iori, the wielders of the powers he’s after. It’s not like he’s an utterly depraved villain...

NeoGeo Battle Coliseum (PlayStation 2)

NeoGeo Battle Coliseum review (PS2)

Reviewed on January 02, 2008

Meet Goodman. Nobody really cares about him. In a world where Geese Howard and Rugal Bernstein – you know, real fighting game bosses – dominate the playing field, this fellow comes up short. He looks like a cheap Igniz knockoff, wields a fiery whip, and controls a purple ball of flame shaped like a baboon’s head. Ooh, fearsome. His design practically screams, “I’m a throwaway villain! Beware my generic scheming!” If he weren’t poised to take control of the SNK universe, he’d hardly...

Zone of the Enders (PlayStation 2)

Zone of the Enders review (PS2)

Reviewed on December 22, 2007

Imagine a situation wherein a group of terrorists captured, say, all of New York. With a small army of remote drones and actual soldiers, they don't sneak in, they flood in over the bridges and within minutes have control over the entire city. The situation is chaotic and fragile. People die, both intentional and unintentional deaths. Panic is widespread. The situation is...well, crazy, for the lack of a better word.
