19XX: The War Against Destiny is a good shoot-em-up. It does a nice job at keeping you on your toes throughout its six stages with the amount of candy-coated bullets that gets thrown your way. 1941: Counter Attack had a lot to prove following up its predecessor. While 1943 Kai wasn't a GREAT game, it did do a lot for the series back when it originally came out: a better, yet, still hard gameplay experience, souped-up weapons, a decent stage count, and other nice additions. 1942 sucked. A lot. Piloting a P-38 through thirty-two stages of the same exact crap is not my idea of a good time. So, I wasn't really going into 1943: The Battle of Midway with high hopes. I read that it has quite a few upgrades that make it better than its predecessor, so I was willing to give the game a shot.

I've played 1942 a couple of times before, and each of those times, I didn't really get into the game. With a grand total of thirty-two stages, I just didn't have the time. But I was willing to give the game another shot when I decided to do a review for it. I made sure I had plenty of time to waste, so I can attempt to make it through the entire title.

One memorable section sends the player down a long corridor to a vast chamber while dodging deadly drops of fluid dripping from the ceiling, leading me to believe my travels had taken me into the depths of the digestive system, where mammoth drops of stomach acid posed a very real threat. Over the past few years there has been a void in my gamer soul where the shooters used to be. I felt destined to be counted among the lost; that vast pool of estranged old-schoolers, disenchanted by style-over-substance shooters, and forever reminiscing about Konami codes and R-Type machines at the mall. Xevious is nothing you'd play if you were embroiled in something great and substantial. But it's a decent distraction when there's nothing else at stake. Brainless blasting is always more attractive to me than an old puzzle game like Ms. Pacman or a provencial pseudo-platformer like Mappy, because you can actually go somewhere. The screen actually scrolls, the illusion of travelling occurs.

It may be fair to argue that Mitchell is not a coin-op company with a lavish history, and we, the gaming public, have not been inundated with titles spanning a 25 year stretch which other more illustrious names can claim. In fact, if you look at a list of their published titles, one name stands out for the frequency of its appearance - and for good reason too.
