Alisia Dragoon review (GEN)

Reviewed on November 12, 2008

But she does have need of two things that set her apart: a quintet of highly-destructive pets that faithfully tail her wherever she treads and the rather handy ability to channel flickering forks of lightning into the faces of evil hostiles ranging from hives of undead monkey-bats to teleporting guardsmen swinging mammoth claymores.

Jim Power: The Arcade Game (Genesis)

Jim Power: The Arcade Game review (GEN)

Reviewed on November 02, 2008

Jim Power is boring. It tries very hard to be diverse, but, in the end, it fails miserably. Its greatest variation lay between levels. But even this has a pattern: epically long on-foot levels followed by a boss, followed by a journey via spaceship through a gauntlet of hazardous obstacles and deadly enemies, followed by further space travel through a maze of winding corridors while trying not to crash into walls, after which the cycle repeats itself before game’s end.

Fantasia (Genesis)

Fantasia review (GEN)

Reviewed on October 21, 2008

I must confess that I listen almost exclusively to classical music. At work, I frequently infuriate my co-workers by turning off their intolerable rap music and switching to NPR. The thing with classical music is that it requires a great deal of concentration to get the most out of it. The pieces that I enjoy hearing the most are the ones that I have heard repeatedly, ones that I perhaps have some familiarity with the score itself, and ones that I'm able to pick up on the subtle nuances.

Sonic 3D Blast (Genesis)

Sonic 3D Blast review (GEN)

Reviewed on September 10, 2008

You know what was Sonic 3D Blast's problem? It wasn't that it strayed from the side-scrolling, platforming angle in favor of an isometric viewpoint. Its problem is that it doesn't have a save feature. For an action game, it's pretty long. Two hours long, to be exact. This has to do with the fact that most of the Zones (stages) in this game drag on longer than they should. You see, each Act of a Zone contains three segments, and in each segment, you'll have to search for Dr. Robotnik's rob...

Earthworm Jim (Genesis)

Earthworm Jim review (GEN)

Reviewed on September 08, 2008

Earthworm Jim thrives on its gaudy humor and wacky experiences. Complex things like plot would be entirely inappropriate here. Players aren’t looking for intricate story-telling or in-depth level design. They’re looking for kicks, for something more than a little different. And this game delivers.

Advanced Busterhawk Gley Lancer (Genesis)

Advanced Busterhawk Gley Lancer review (GEN)

Reviewed on July 15, 2008

With a spelling error in the title, a domicile on a sometimes technically inept console, and membership in a genre that prides itself on redundancy, expectations are not particularly high for Gley Lancer. “A shoot-em-up,” said I, “on the Mega Drive no less! I look forward to the suicidal alien pilots, ear-bleeding music, grainy graphics, and a selection of generic weapons ranging from lasers to different color lasers to bullets that fire so fast that they are actually just a different k...

Michael Jackson's Moonwalker (Genesis)

Michael Jackson's Moonwalker review (GEN)

Reviewed on June 30, 2008

If I had to say who my three biggest heroes were I’d say Jesus, Optimus Prime, and Michael Jackson. This list would be absolute if there were video games made about them. Well, the former two appear in games in some shape or form, but I’d never expect MJ to have his own game. While I have heard of Michael Jackson’s Moonwalker for the Sega Genesis from sources such as G4, it wasn’t until earlier this year that I went to a buddy’s place and rummaged through his old NES and Genesis collections t...

Ka-Ge-Ki: Fists of Steel (Genesis)

Ka-Ge-Ki: Fists of Steel review (GEN)

Reviewed on May 26, 2008

''Hey, let's fight!'' is a challenge I issue to people while I am drunk. When sober ''Hey, let's fight!'' sounds as absurd as challenging someone ''Hey, let's play!'' or ''Hey, let's cuddle!'' And cuddling is the last thing I want to do when thinking of Ka Ge Ki's ilk. Ka Ge Ki: Fists of Steel by Sage's Creation is a poorly designed one-on-one brawler set in a world where everybody has illogically large heads and four inch legs. They also taunt you (or you taunt them; I can't tell) by constantly...

The Great Waldo Search (Genesis)

The Great Waldo Search review (GEN)

Reviewed on March 07, 2008

I played this game for one reason only: because I wanted to review something. This was the first time I actually tried to play The Great Waldo Search, the previous two times I wasn't even trying and was a bit confused. However, with the thought of writing a review of the game this time around, I kind of tried to understand what was going on. Of course, we all know the premise of Waldo: you have to find this stupid-looking idiot within a giant, detailed map filled with oddball characters. ...

Sonic & Knuckles review (GEN)

Reviewed on February 20, 2008

He’s blue, he’s spiky, it’s that hedgehog that’s too quick to be flattened by oncoming traffic and after beating Robotnik twice, he’s got no time for visiting fellow hedgehog flat-mates. The death egg ship you thought was destroyed for goodreally landed on top of Lava Reef, and the not-so-free-range egg-shaped Dr. Robotnik manages to sneakily trick Knuckles the Echidna to obtain the Master Emerald to repair the Death Egg ship. It’s up to Sonic and Knuckles to team together and stop Robotn...

Undead Line review (GEN)

Reviewed on February 19, 2008

It’s hard to play a fantasy-based shmup like Undead Line without (a) recalling that horrible Square NES release King’s Knight and (b) laughing. Even if one of these games turned out to be good, I will always think the idea of a shooter set in medieval times is silly, especially when it comes to projectiles. The armor clad hero of Undead Line

Mighty Morphin Power Rangers review (GEN)

Reviewed on February 12, 2008

The Earth is in grave danger, and we can thank two stupid astronauts because of that. As they walk on the moon, they stumble upon what they thought was a dumpster. Yeah. They decide to open up the "dumpster", and by doing so, release Rita Repulsa and her minions from their prison. What do these brave, courageous astronauts do next? Run away. Thanks. Contra: Hard Corps (Genesis)

Contra: Hard Corps review (GEN)

Reviewed on December 07, 2007

I hate to say it, but Contra: Hard Corps is HARDCORE. Dozens of enemy soldiers swamp you right from the get-go and huge robotic monstrosities tear through the cityscape in order to blast you to hell. Bullets whizz by loud and fast and explosions from countless wreckages fill the screen with dazzling pyrotechnics. With all the carnage going on there's very little time to sit down and think about how you're going to save the world. Oh, and forget about keeping an eye on your life...
