Twinkle Tale (Genesis)

Twinkle Tale review (GEN)

Reviewed on February 23, 2007

As soon as the girl enters that mountainous area of the first level, rocks start plummeting from the top of the screen. While they are easy to dodge, smart players may choose to not have their favorite weapon equipped during this section, as it could be quite damaging to blunder into a boulder and wind up weakened after this brief section. Because, with magic-firing mages and gigantic golems providing a gauntlet to pass before engaging in battle with the chimera that serves as the stage’s boss, being at top offensive capacity is definitely desirable.

Comix Zone review (GEN)

Meet Sketch Turner. He’s just an average guy, a man trying to make a living with his skills as an artist. In fact, he’s working on his latest work of art, a surrealistic comic book series that could garner him nationwide acclaim. But until that happens, he’s just some random nobody, cooped up in his New York City apartment as a fierce thunderstorm rages outside. As Sketch sets his ink pen down and takes pride in yet another finished comic page, a lightning bolt races through the room and zaps hi...

Strider (Genesis)

Strider review (GEN)

Reviewed on February 18, 2007

As darkness falls across the land, a figure moves through the shadows. This mysterious person is armed with his trusty katana, a seemingly endless supply of shurikens, and the combat prowess of a hardened warrior. His purpose is simple: stealthily kill the target and escape unnoticed. As the nameless man creeps up through the gloomy night, his prey doesn’t even realize the danger looming ever so closer. It doesn’t really matter, anyway; the target will be dead in mere seconds once the veiled kil...

Phelios (Genesis)

Phelios review (GEN)

Artemis looks and acts much like your standard damsel in distress with her long blond hair and scant clothing barely covering her SWEET rack as she begs for Apollo to remember their time together and come save her. Well, while that was all I needed to see before leaping into action, according to the actual legends, Artemis was more of a butt-kicking tomboy type who likely was a role model for young Greek lesbians.

Master of Weapon review (GEN)

Reviewed on December 03, 2006

If that didn't make things easy enough, then reveal in the hailstorm of power-ups that drip from the screen every time you manage to shoot down one of the many lime-green penile-shaped ships that explode upon the merest of bullet grazes. These power-ups will literally outnumber enemy projectiles and offer you the substandard upgrades such as making your standard laser suddenly fire in double or triple spread shots.

Streets of Rage 2 (Genesis)

Streets of Rage 2 review (GEN)

Reviewed on September 29, 2006

And make no mistake — losing the services of Adam was such a crushing blow to comrades Axel and Blaze that they needed to enlist TWO other vigilante crime fighters in an attempt to replace him. Skate is a skateboarder who I’ve never used or even considered using. Just look at the little pipsqueak and you’ll understand. Max is a big, powerful guy who suffers from being the slowest-moving human being in the world. Sure, he can wade through Mr. X’s foot soldiers with ease, littering the city streets with broken bodies and shattered dreams, but put him against nimble, agile foes and things get ugly.

Ys III: Wanderers From Ys (Genesis)

Ys III: Wanderers From Ys review (GEN)

Reviewed on August 27, 2006

Ys III presents its bosses not as the typical war-of-attrition drag-out slugfests, but instead as short, brutal affairs that leave little room for tactical manoeuvring and places a bigger emphasis on quick-fire dodging and desperate slicing.

Spider-Man & Venom: Maximum Carnage review (GEN)

Maximum Carnage may not be 100% faithful to the comic's experience, but it comes as close as a sidescroller could hope.

Tiny Toon Adventures: Buster's Hidden Treasure (Genesis)

Tiny Toon Adventures: Buster's Hidden Treasure review (GEN)

Reviewed on August 21, 2006

Ever wondered what it would be like if you blended Mario Bros. and Sonic into one game? Well, I'm sure it would be a lot like Tiny Toon Adventures: Buster's Hidden Treasure, assuming you threw in the whole Toon thing in there somewhere. Oh, and don't be turned off by the fact that this is a show-based game, it's made my Konami, and it has "brilliance" written all over it. Well, sometimes, the "brilliance" is covered by a bit of "frustration", but we'll get to that later.

Exile (Genesis)

Exile review (GEN)

Reviewed on August 03, 2006

However, I soon realized that virtually everything had suddenly been reduced to nothing more than speed bumps. If an enemy hit me, I didn’t even flinch. My preferred boss strategy was simply to stand in front of the villain and hit the “attack” button as rapidly as I could until it perished. At some point in the game, Sadler learned magic. I never cast a single spell. I also didn’t bother purchasing the stat-enhancing items and only used a total of four healing goods (two during the final boss fight).

Task Force Harrier EX (Genesis)

Task Force Harrier EX review (GEN)

Reviewed on July 07, 2006

After completing the bland, but inoffensive, first stage, I noticed the second looked exactly the same. As did the third. And the fourth. Yep, this game possesses 13 stages and the first four were near-identical, with my plane flying over the Siberian tundra or some similarly frozen wasteland.

Devilish: The Next Possession (Genesis)

Devilish: The Next Possession review (GEN)

Reviewed on July 01, 2006

It's such a genuinely zany concept that one wonders going in just how such a thing couldn't provide a quick burst of amusement. And it does. I actually chuckled at the wonderfully contrived story describing a prince and a princess turned into paddles by evil magic. The problem is that if you've played Breakout, you've played this, and while such things as zombies and boss fights add a little to the gameplay value, Bad Omen runs on its novelty. Once you get past that, the experience quickly loses its lustre.

Sagaia (Genesis)

Sagaia review (GEN)

Reviewed on June 21, 2006

Due to the path I'm taking, my objective is the sea urchin-like monstrosity known as Leadain — a foul contraption with multiple deadly attacks and seemingly more lives than a cat. It kills me, forcing me to re-enter the fray with only a pair of pea-shooter weapons. Not even the luck of the gods will allow me to see the next level under these conditions.

Shining Force (Genesis)

Shining Force review (GEN)

Reviewed on June 08, 2006

During the game’s final battles, I didn’t have the courage to send Max into the heart of conflict. Why? Because if he gets defeated, the game ends and I found out the hard way that one unlucky confrontation can accomplish that in the blink of an eye.
