Mega Man Soccer (SNES)

Mega Man Soccer review (SNES)

Reviewed on December 03, 2008

When one used to think of a gaming franchise, such as Nintendo’s Super Mario Bros, chances are that the first things that will come into their mind is Mario’s adventures against Bowser. But now with all of the Mario games released not related to the original series, such as Super Mario Kart and Mario Golf, one might not necessarily think of those adventures, but of some other event that he participated in.

Kirby's Dream Land 3 review (SNES)

Reviewed on December 03, 2008

Although not with plenty of flaws, Kirby Super Star was a giant step in the right direction. Having several moves at your disposal that varied with each power and combining multiple styles of gameplay was much better than the previous aging Kirby formula. The game was only slightly above average, but at least there seemed to be some life in the Kirby series.

Out to Lunch (SNES)

Out to Lunch review (SNES)

Reviewed on December 03, 2008

Although most of my gaming time is spent playing manly Xbox and PC titles, I have played several messed up games over the years. In the matter of fact The Lost Vikings, a puzzle game starring three goofy Viking misfits is one of my favorite SNES games. Marsupilami for the Sega Genesis is another weird game that I would’ve loved if it wasn’t for a few annoying problems. But these games are nothing compared to Out to Lunch, which is easily the weirdest game I’ve ever played....

The Lost Vikings (SNES)

The Lost Vikings review (SNES)

Reviewed on December 03, 2008

Vikings were known for a lot of things such as farming, trading, and exploring, but the trait they are best known for was their brutality. They were fierce warriors that were feared by almost everyone due to their unpredictable raids and Pagan beliefs (the beliefs weren’t popular at the time in an almost entirely Christian Europe). Since videogames that contain a lot of hack and slash action always seemed to be selling very well, I am very surprised that there are very few games, if any that s...

3x3 Eyes: Juuma Houkan review (SNES)

Reviewed on November 14, 2008

There comes a time in every man’s life when for the sake of a seemingly pointless competition he is required to review a game whose name is a number because he wasn’t lucky enough to be one of the twenty-six other people and get a letter. Unfortunately for me, I have a terrible university internet connection, which ruled out downloading the game XIII and reviewing that. So naturally, I began looking through some romsets and picked the first game in my 7,637 SNES roms – 3x3 Eyes: Juuma Houkan. Go...

Dragon Quest V: Tenkuu no Hanayome (SNES)

Dragon Quest V: Tenkuu no Hanayome review (SNES)

Reviewed on October 10, 2008

Your hero might be a standard silent protagonist and his supporting cast isn't really given any motivation for their actions other than utter devotion to your quest, but as I played Dragon Quest V, I felt more of a connection to them than I have for many characters in modern games. The concept of having the main character grow up during the course of the game, get married and have kids is a rare one in the world of console RPGs and Enix was able to make all of it feel fresh and memorable.

The Sporting News Baseball (SNES)

The Sporting News Baseball review (SNES)

Reviewed on September 08, 2008

I spent so many summer days slugging the hell out of the ball, the cornfield always my sanctuary. I’d run every top slugger of the time (1993) out there, 100 pitches each, and afterward record their totals in spreadsheets. I’d be surprised by results, and forced to test them again. Could Greg Vaughn really have more raw power than Danny Tartabull? Was Darryl Strawberry better than Bobby Bonillia? I had to know.

EarthBound (SNES)

EarthBound review (SNES)

Reviewed on July 26, 2008

EarthBound is a turn based RPG that is unlike any RPG of its time. The setting is 1990's America as envisioned in the quirky eye of series creator, Shigesato Itoi. He wanted to make a game that he wanted to play, and with this notion he created the highly adored EarthBound for the Super Nintendo in 1994. To many, what makes EarthBound a unique entity in gaming is its humor, colorful and crisp visuals, numerous American pop-culture references and a funkadelic soundtrack with a feel that has ye...

Umihara Kawase review (SNES)

Reviewed on July 05, 2008

Every puzzle game I have ever played on the SNES has sucked. First there’s the standard billion and one mahjong clones the Japanese consume like so much Pocky. Then there’s your fifty different Tetris games, and digitized versions of the old standbys – picross, crosswords, things like that. You can look through almost every one of the 6,766 roms in the last released SNES romset, and you will not find one single puzzle game that does not totally blow. Then someone introduced me to Umihara Kawase,...

Acrobat Mission (SNES)

Acrobat Mission review (SNES)

Reviewed on June 30, 2008

Of all the shoot em’ ups on home consoles that have never seen a US release I was surprised to find out that the Super Nintendo had ported 95% of all the Shmups made for the system; the only games that never made their way to the states included three cute em’ ups including Cotton, Parodious Da and Cho Ainki and only two of the serious kinds of space shooters (with Dezeamon falling somewhere in between) consisting of Rendering Ranger and Acrobat Mission, the latter of which possessing such a won...

BlaZeon: The Bio-Cyborg Challenge review (SNES)

Reviewed on June 30, 2008

BlaZeon is one of the many SNES shooter titles that went unnoticed by the majority of the general public and after spending a lot of time with old school shmups I have to say that I agree with most that the experience of bog standard shooters like blah-zeon rival Melatonin in being making gamers drowsy, I have to say it's got a few charms scattered in its evidently flawed game design.

Strike Gunner: S.T.G. (SNES)

Strike Gunner: S.T.G. review (SNES)

Reviewed on June 26, 2008

The only question is: would a player want to go back through this one to tinker with the difficulty and experiment with each weapon in different levels to find the perfect combination? I didn't. While I really liked some of the concepts present in Strike Gunner, I found myself wishing they'd been placed in a better game.

Star Ocean review (SNES)

Reviewed on February 28, 2008

Ratix Farrence and Milly Kiliet had only known these spacefarers for a matter of hours, yet already Ronixis Kenni and Iria Silvestoli were risking their lives for a pair of complete strangers. They were breaking Rezonian protocol and pulling their ship out of the station where they were currently under hold. Their destination: Planet Stream, gateway to unlimited passage through time and space. It was a dangerous operation, but the fate of an entire civilization was at stake.

Mortal Kombat review (SNES)

Reviewed on February 16, 2008

After the phenomenal success of Street Fighter II in 1991, it didn’t come as a surprise to anyone that imitators quickly came along. SNK created many a franchise in the early 90’s which are now beloved cult classics, but the imitator that became the most infamous was by far Mortal Kombat.

Flying Hero: Bugyuru no Daibouken (SNES)

Flying Hero: Bugyuru no Daibouken review (SNES)

Reviewed on January 23, 2008

The graphics were bright and colorful and it was pretty entertaining to see Sofel’s take on certain staple elements of shooters — such as the 1943-ish gunship in the game’s third level which leads to a boss fight when the final two crew members leap off the crippled boat and merge into a gigantic pirate bird.

Final Fantasy III (SNES)

Final Fantasy III review (SNES)

Reviewed on December 25, 2007

One of the most popular debates in gaming is determining the best Final Fantasy game. Many people claim VII or X to be the best, many people are also noobs and should be shot for saying such ignorant things. Now that the fanboy flames have been ignited, I present to you what I consider to be the best of the Final Fantasy games, Final Fantasy VI.

Ka-blooey (SNES)

Ka-blooey review (SNES)

Reviewed on December 20, 2007

Kablooey is truly something special. Most bad games offer some sort of entertainment, deep down you know that you could be playing a more fun game, but at least you are slightly entertained by simplistic mechanics. In Kablooey, any semblance of entertainment in the game is constantly bogged down by some of the worst design decisions that could be conceived. Most of the aspects of Kablooey are pretty weak on their own, but they all come together in a way that makes Kablooey simultaneously one of ...

Mario to Wario review (SNES)

Reviewed on December 09, 2007

It's a beautiful day, and you're out taking a pleasant stroll and communing with nature. But your whole day is about to be ruined, as some douchebag decides it'd be absolutely hilarious to drop a bucket on your head. Due to your stubby and useless arms, you just can't get that thing off. Blind and helpless, what do you do? Sit and wait for help, act nonchalant about having a bucket stuck on your head, call out? Not if you're Mario, who feels the best course of action is to blindly walk forward i...

Super Metroid (SNES)

Super Metroid review (SNES)

Reviewed on October 09, 2007

It’s raining. Not like a little sprinkle or a fine drizzle, but an all-out torrent. The water is running steadily down the sides of Samus Aran’s spaceship, sending mini-waterfalls cascading to the muddy ground below. No one is going to mind, though. The natives of Zebes have long since cleared out of here. The only welcoming committee Samus could have expected included a bunch of laser gun-toting Space Pirates and a host of intergalactic monstrosities. But right now, there’s only this vas...
