Pikmin 2 (GameCube)

Pikmin 2 review (GCN)

Reviewed on December 08, 2004

Pikmin 2 has a lot to live up to. Its predecessor, Pikmin, was one of those beautiful, typifying moments for Nintendo when they released a genre-bending new franchise that really lived up to their name. Pikmin was my favorite first-wave software title on the GameCube, and even in a post-Wind Waker world it remains at the top of my list. So Pikmin 2 is faced with the realistically obvious but easier-said-than-done task of any sequel—the task of proving itself better than the previous installment,...
Panzer Dragoon Orta (Xbox)

Panzer Dragoon Orta review (XBX)

Reviewed on April 21, 2003

Orta takes everything its predecessors had to offer, polishes it until it shines, and then fancies it up with glitter paint and elbow macaroni. It’s just as breathtaking, just as intricate, just as feature-laden, and (wait for it…) even as challenging as the Panzer Dragoons that came before it. What’s that? Do you doubt me? Well, you can decide for yourself, because it even includes the original Panzer Dragoon in its entirety as a bonus!
Turok: Evolution (Xbox)

Turok: Evolution review (XBX)

Reviewed on March 22, 2003

The original Turok was amazing to me, especially as I had been a console-only gamer up to that point. The wedding of fast, fluid, non-linear FPS action with well-conceived levels struck me as a great and original formula at the time, and on that basic level I consider it superior to the almost universally-praised Goldeneye. Taking a trip back to my sleek, black Nintendo 64 confirms that Turok the Dinosaur Hunter stands the test of time as well.
Max Payne (Xbox)

Max Payne review (XBX)

Reviewed on March 21, 2003

Plenty of games borrow from pop culture, but few do it heavily without insulting intelligence. Many games base their gameplay on a single gimmick, but a scant minority of these flesh the gimmick out or prop it up enough to be anything but annoying. Every other game these days wants to be hyper-realistic, but not many achieve realism without that very aspect being a huge fault. Quality humor is another screw that too often comes loose in video games. Max Payne, however, manages to be hip, funny, ...

Super Mario Sunshine (GameCube)

Super Mario Sunshine review (GCN)

Reviewed on February 04, 2003

Are We Disappointed Yet?

A release like that of Super Mario Sunshine brings with it some pretty high expectations. The last time Nintendo gave us a Mario game (and a rushed one at that), it was so spectacular that most would wonder if it could be surpassed. At the same time, even those filled with doubt must also be filled with anticipation and longing for another display of that spectacular genius. The rule of thumb seems to be that one shouldn’t approach any big-name ga...

Metroid Fusion review (GBA)

A Tear in this Old Man's Eye

In my heyday - back when polygons stayed in geometry class where they belonged - the American entertainment industry first became host to what would become perhaps the most powerful symbiotic entity ever to come over from Japan - the Nintendo Entertainment System. It wasn’t long until everybody and his grandma owned one. But while most of the NES-owning kids cared more about Tecmo Super Bowl or Double Dribble, there was one enchanting game that spent ...
Doom 64 (Nintendo 64)

Doom 64 review (N64)

Reviewed on January 28, 2003

In the Beginning…

…there was Doom, and it was good. Since then, the SNES, Playstation, 32X, Jaguar, Saturn, GBA, and even the 3D0 have all had Doom ported to them. Any Doom connoisseur can probably appreciate any of these ports on some level, but none could deny the plain fact that they are not, nor do they strive to be, anything but straight ports of the original games. Sure, “Doom Custom Playstation Edition” brought us a few new levels, some ambient background audio and colored...

Star Fox Adventures review (GCN)

Charming, and Somehow Familiar…

Like many gamers, I have a history with the Star Fox franchise filled with fond memories. So when I heard that the game was switching developers and genres for a trip to the Gamecube, I was very intrigued and at least a little worried. In any event, this was one game I didn't intend to miss. And while I can say that my fears that Star Fox might be ruined were dispelled, it's not because Star Fox Adventures lived up to my hopes ...
Genma Onimusha (Xbox)

Genma Onimusha review (XBX)

Reviewed on January 26, 2003

About four years ago we first heard about the ''ninja Resident Evil''. I was excited about the idea at first, but it all but left my mind when I played and was disappointed by the similarly-marketed Dino Crisis. Now that the eventual result of this idea, Onimusha, has come to my native console, I am happy to be able to praise it as being good as or better than any Resident Evil game ever.

The story of the game is set up nicely. You play as Samanosuke, a noble Samurai who fights for no c...
