The Legend of Heroes: A Tear of Vermillion review (PSP)

Reviewed on August 29, 2007

Throughout the course of the 30+ hour adventure, Avin and Mile will come across countless scenarios of people in need of bonding, just like they once were. While Avin and his newfound friend set out in what appears to be a typical turn-based RPG at first glance, the amazing attention to detail is what truly sets this apart from the others.

I glide through the sea with the grace of an Olympic swimmer. The sun's rays burst through the surface of the ocean's water, making everything sparkle beautifully. A friend nearby challenges me, dares me to see how high above the water's surface I can leap. I accept his challenge, pointing myself toward the sky and launching straight into the air. I break the water's surface, a gorgeous silhouette as I pose in midair...

Galactic Civilizations II: Dread Lords review (PC)

August 1, 2007- On this day, I created my people. I named them the Memians, after internet memes of old. I knew I would need to give them the right skills to survive in this harsh galaxy, so upon them, I blessed them with augmentations to their soldiering skills, their shipbuilding abilities, and their reproductive 'talents'. My bunny-like custom race--with their ability to fuck like rabbits and increase their population by over nine thousand times--set out to dominate thei...

To live a life full of regret is a regret itself. No man understands this more than the twenty year old Rolf Landale, the protagonist of our story. At first glance you may pass him off as a generic RPG hero, with his blue hair, determined expression, mastery of swords and do-gooder attitude. However, you would be quite mistaken to simply pass him off as such.

Dragon Quest V: Tenkuu no Hanayome review (SNES)

Reviewed on July 12, 2007

There comes a time in everyone's life when they reflect back on their accomplishments and question if what they've worked so hard for has truly been worthwhile. For the hero of this tale, the silent, violet-clad, nameless (until you give him one anyway) protagonist has had quite a lot to reflect upon. His mother disappeared early in his life, and he was raised by his father, who traveled with him all over kingdom come. So much, in fact, that our young hero, a mere five years of age, can't even r...

Imagine yourself as you run quickly through a beautifully detailed cave. The bluish-green crystalline walls, the distant sound of a waterfall rushing through your ears, and a haunting melody that plays in the background as you hack + slash your way through a myriad of monsters. Suddenly, you come to a ledge. Floating tiles, one of which is flashing, circle around this ledge, and you have to jump on the ones that flash. You hold your breah, and take a leap of faith... and miss. Plunging into the ...

It must be easy having a superhero in your life. Gotham City would be screwed without the exploits of Batman keeping its people safe from the Joker and other villains. Without Superman crushing Lex Luthor, the denizens of Metropolis wouldn't stand a chance. And for the people of the Morning and Evening Cities, their problems are danced away by a group of superheroes known only as Ouendan.

Dragon Quest VIII: Journey of the Cursed King review (PS2)

Reviewed on November 27, 2005

I'll be honest with you: I'm a big fan of the Dragon Quest series, often famed for having a rather simple storyline, a "boring" battle system, and graphics that most people can only describe as "shit". In fact, I'm such a big fan that I'm often labeled "fanboy" by a surprising number of people. That being said, it should be no surprise that I was salivating over the screenshots of the eighth entry in the series as I anticipated the North American release.

Ys: The Oath in Felghana review (PC)

Reviewed on July 14, 2005

As my mouth watered as I gazed at screenshots and salivated over the new Ys trailer on developer Falcom's website, I couldn't help but notice one thing; It looked remarkably similar to Ys III: Wanderers from Ys! Indeed, it did, and for good reason. Ys: The Oath in Felghana is not only a remake of the original Ys III, but a total overhaul, changing nearly everything but the music and storyline. However, as much as I'd like to say, "If you've played Ys III...

Ys II Eternal review (PC)

Reviewed on April 25, 2005

In an age of bad graphics and niche systems came a game known as Ys. The name, near-impossible as it is to pronounce to those who first see it (It sounds like east, without the t) sparks one of three emotions to those that hear of it: Sheer love, for the game's brilliant gameplay and Adol's silent charm; Pure hatred, at the game's difficulty level and 'simple' push-to-attack mechanics; or that intense feeling of confusion at the fact that this is the first time they've ever heard of this ...

Mystic Ark review (SNES)

In the early nineties, Enix released an oddly named game known as Elnard to an otherwise unsuspecting Japanese public. A number of months later, the stateside release hit, and due to the fact that Elnard was a damn stupid name, the American release was renamed The 7th Saga. It made a mild splash in the gaming world, but fell into semi-obscurity under the thresholds of other, better games released at the time. Then, 1995 rolled around, seeing the release of memorable titles s...

Dark Cloud 2 review (PS2)

Reviewed on March 13, 2005

Near the beginning of the PS2's release a little-known game by the name of Dark Cloud was released. It was fun, but nothing special made it stand out other than its innovative, yet slightly restricted Georama system. It fell into a pit of mediocrity, and before the American release even hit, there was talk of a sequel.

Breath of Fire: Dragon Quarter review (PS2)

Reviewed on February 27, 2005

In the days of old, nearly every game I played seemed to have a sort of magic to it. Developers poured their hearts and souls into their highly pixelated works with bad graphics in an attempt to bring greatness to a "nerdy" pastime.
