The Lion King (Genesis)

The Lion King review (GEN)

Reviewed on June 14, 2009

It’s not every day we see a movie-licensed game that’s actually any good. Traditionally, they’re manifests of cash-in mediocrity when developers are contracted to (quickly) produce a title on every console available and hope it will sell. Generally they often do. Brand recognition prevails over genuine quality as these games chart highly, yet do well to even achieve a 6/10 score. The situation has improved somewhat through the ages, but the likes of Goldeneye and certain Star Wars ...
Sonic the Hedgehog Chaos (Sega Master System)

Sonic the Hedgehog Chaos review (SMS)

Reviewed on June 08, 2009

Why another Sonic release on the antiquated Master System? The 16-bit Sonic series was selling the Mega Drive faster than you can say “Nintendon’t”, and the SMS barely tapped the dominating NES. However its strong user base in Europe and Brazil still flourished, and with games being made on the technically equivalent Game Gear handheld, there’s no reason not to release another Sonic on the SMS.
Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3 (PlayStation)

Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3 review (PSX)

Reviewed on June 03, 2009

Tony Hawk’s is probably one of the most ubiquitous franchises of the last decade. It’s appeared on every format made since ollie-ing into the PlayStation park in 1999, and when each game is designed to be built better than the last, playing this eight-year old title is like skating backwards into a time machine.
Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (Sega Master System)

Sonic the Hedgehog 2 review (SMS)

Reviewed on May 25, 2009

Back in 1992 the Mega Drive had superseded Master System for quite some time. The “made for blast-processing” Sonic the Hedgehog shifted units like hot pancakes and it’s 8-bit predecessor looked long sent into obscurity after being comfortably beaten by the inferior NES.
Spyro: Season of Ice (Game Boy Advance)

Spyro: Season of Ice review (GBA)

Reviewed on May 18, 2009

After Insomniac stepped down from the Spyro series after an epic trilogy on PSone, this was the first of the series not developed by them, beginning the fall from grace from a signature franchise. Season of Ice picks up from Spyro’s last PlayStation outing, Year of the Dragon, where one of the Sorceress’s troops got a trifle bored after being one of the few Rhynoc’s that didn’t fall victim to a toast by Spyro. Failing to endure his forced discharge from service, he thus pinches her spell book to...
FIFA Soccer 09 (DS)

FIFA Soccer 09 review (DS)

Reviewed on December 30, 2008

Developing football games on the DS used to be like playing both Gerrard and Lampard on the same pitch, never quite worked, and the amount of titles made shows. Gameloft's acclaimed Real Football series stands as its only competitor; the shambolic Pro Evolution Soccer went out with a wimper. FIFA’s typical multi-platform ubiquity can easily be dismissed as another EA style money-spinner, as brand-recognition is a sure sign of sales. But FIFA isn’t the complacent footb...
Virtua Racing (Genesis)

Virtua Racing review (GEN)

Reviewed on December 06, 2008

Pushing a games console to its limits can be risky business for developers. Try too hard and the game will get panned for looking ugly and having choppy frame-rates, but games are expected to make some use of the systems potential. Efficiently making the most of the systems resources whilst still making a decent looking, playable game that doesn’t get swamped by slowdown is perhaps one of the greatest challenges in developing a game.
Spyro 2: Ripto's Rage! (PlayStation)

Spyro 2: Ripto's Rage! review (PSX)

Reviewed on December 06, 2008

There was a time when Spyro games were good. Out of absolutely pure coincidence, this was the same time when Spyro was made by Insomniac, who since moved on to Ratchet and Clank. The original Spyro the Dragon was the start of what would become a hallmark franchise of the PSone platform genre, stripping 3D platforming to its fundamentals and demonstrated how they should be made. A small, cute purple dragon but with an attitude, and, um, fiery breath, how could anyone hate wee Spyro?...
Pokemon Yellow Version: Special Pikachu Edition (Game Boy)

Pokemon Yellow Version: Special Pikachu Edition review (GB)

Reviewed on December 06, 2008

I remember the days when Pokemon was all the rage in my primary school years. Trading card swapping was everywhere, rushing from school to catch the program on TV and eventually most schools banned any merchandise being brought in because of card theft. How dare they! Those were the days when everyone kept saying Pokemon would never go out of fashion…
Spyro: Enter the Dragonfly (PlayStation 2)

Spyro: Enter the Dragonfly review (PS2)

Reviewed on December 06, 2008

Oh Spyro. How unfortunate such a franchise suffered a fate that parallels with the likes of Sonic the Hedgehog and Crash Bandicoot. Once good on its console of origin, but a step up on to following platforms and he’s lost his sense of what he was. Yet despite their console mediocrity, they seemed to get it right on portable formats with relatively pleasing results.
Half-Life: Opposing Force (PC)

Half-Life: Opposing Force review (PC)

Reviewed on December 06, 2008

1998’s Half-life was seen by many as revolutionary to the FPS genre from its atmospheric feel, the first person presentation of the story and it’s astounding gameplay. Since then, dozens of mods spawned from its engine such as Counter-Strike, plus expansions like this and 2001’s Blue Shift. Half-Life: Opposing Force intervenes with the original HL’s plot, playing the role of US Marine Corporal Adrian Shepherd. As part of the Black Mesa clean-up crew, you must s...
RollerCoaster Tycoon (PC)

RollerCoaster Tycoon review (PC)

Reviewed on December 06, 2008

Chris Sawyer has been no stranger to management games in the 90’s, single-handedly programming Transport Tycoon before his White Knuckle project, eventually renamed Rollercoaster Tycoon. Various expansions and sequels followed, the third seeing a shift to full-on 3D and ending Sawyer’s exclusive development, but this original RCT remains as strong as ever. You’re simply building theme parks with a large emphasis on constructing your own custom rollercoasters. Swanky c...
Super Mario 64 DS (DS)

Super Mario 64 DS review (DS)

Reviewed on December 01, 2008

What a surprise. With another portable console by Nintendo come more excuses for them to remake Mario games released on their home consoles with similar hardware specs. With the DS effectively being the portable equivalent of the N64, it’s inevitable we’d see a DS remake of Super Mario 64. But the challenge here was how to grind out some use from that second screen.
Guitar Hero: On Tour (DS)

Guitar Hero: On Tour review (DS)

Reviewed on November 25, 2008

Creating a game multiplatform is one way for a publisher to sit on the fence by selling as many titles as possible without taking the risk of developing for the losing console. When multiplatform games appear on every active format available, you can’t help but think the publisher (*cough*EA*cough*) are trying to milk the franchise a touch. But when we’re talking a multiplatform attempt to downsize a peripheral based game in which the controller isn’t exactly handheld, a la Guitar Hero, s...
Roller Coaster Tycoon 3 (PC)

Roller Coaster Tycoon 3 review (PC)

Reviewed on August 10, 2008

Following on from the well-received Transport and Railroad Tycoon, Chris Sawyer’sRollercoaster Tycoon in 1999 helped paved the way to the many tycoon games we see today, even if it is now a highly-milked genre. The unanticipated success of RCT really gave Bullfrog’s cumbersome Theme Park sim a kick up the rear end by showing how a game designing roller-coasters and theme parks was meant be done, and five years on this third outing finally introduces it to 3D graphics. Although the ...
Guardian of Darkness (PlayStation)

Guardian of Darkness review (PSX)

Reviewed on July 28, 2008

I don’t think Boo was lying when he told me there were review scores below 5/10. After years of only reviewing games I actually liked, delving into rubbish games territory wasn't the smoothest of transitions. I greatly credit reviewers who are prepared to spend the time just to finish these monstrosities of titles; as I just discovered there was a bloody good reason why I never reviewed bad games in the first place. Labouring through only part of this was a severe test of endurance, will and mot...
Oh No! More Lemmings (PC)

Oh No! More Lemmings review (PC)

Reviewed on June 27, 2008

Even though Lemmings was one of my long-time obsessions as a kid, I recently concluded it was now actually a bit boring. The learning curve is far too gentle, there’s an unnecessary abundance of lengthy unchallenging levels, and there’s plenty of map recycling. I often bypassed this expansion from its difficulty, and only a recent play revealed what a gem it is. Eight-minute levels of constant bridge-building have been replaced by snappy, quirky puzzles which are far tougher than the original, s...

Lemmings review (PC)

Reviewed on June 18, 2008

It’s quite hard to appreciate retro classics these days without actually being there at the time, especially when coming to grips with torrid graphics and dubious bleeps claiming to be music. But in this case, it’s ironic that a game I absolutely loved as a kid fails to satisfy much nostalgia. With this being a serious keystone in gaming, being ported on every computer, console and handheld up to the PlayStation, it’s hard to pin down my dissatisfaction. Maybe it’s the fact I played this game to...
Sonic the Hedgehog (Sega Master System)

Sonic the Hedgehog review (SMS)

Reviewed on June 01, 2008

The fact that Sega managed a fully respectable release of the Mega Drive’s lynchpin franchise on the Master System that had long since lost to the NES sometimes leaves you to wonder why Sega couldn’t have thought of this game sooner. This down-scale undoubtedly gives that fat plumber a run for his coins, but its only the hardware’s strong European market (they do have sense) that drove this later release. Inevitably the lack of blast-processing means the removal of the 16-bit versions signature ...
Super Mario Galaxy (Wii)

Super Mario Galaxy review (WII)

Reviewed on May 24, 2008

Super Mario is such forgiving fellow. In one game he may be trying to take Bowser and his henchmen off the throne, and in others he’s playing a gentlemanly game of golf or tennis with him. But Mario games that involve pounding on top of Bowser have become an increased rarity; this is only the third original 3D Mario title ever. For many, this is truly the second, as Super Mario Sunshine didn’t count apparently.
