Dear Genj,

I recently got back in touch with some old friends from high school. Despite not talking for nearly 8 years, I was amazed to find out that our hobbies and interests are nearly identical! We like the same music, comics, and video games, but there was one glaring difference.

They LARP.

I know that you're somewhat of an expert in this field, so please tell me what I should do? Can I really approach them on the subject? I don't want to lose them again. Actually, it might be kind of scary, because they play in a big group. That's a lot of foam swords and magic missiles. I don't know, maybe I could leave it be. After all, they did look pretty happy in their pictures.

	Genj - July 15, 2007 (09:22 AM) I can appreciate the severity of this "LARPing Situation" as I've recently learned an old friend of mine from High School listens to nothing but Nickelback. I will come out and say I think LARPing on days that aren't the 31st of October is the dumbest thing ever and I would never participate in such tomfoolery. That said, one shouldn't base whether or not they go LARPing on another's opinion. If it makes you or your friends happy, so be it. It's not hurting anybody. Go be Broomhilda, the buxom Dark Elf witch of Middle Earth, for all I care. Just be sure you can look yourself in the mirror afterwards. I have trouble doing that just from watching Grey's Anatomy. If you're not going to get into the LARPing game, be sure to handle the situation with tact. Remember these are your friends. You should enjoy their company for other reasons in spite of some other junk they do. One person recently told me they broke up with a girl over the fact she liked Fall Out Boy, and as much as I hate that band, it was the dumbest thing I had ever heard. Be careful with teasing over this too. Most of my friends know by now I'll make shocking or absurd statements to be funny (and they usually do come off as funny, so whoo-hoo). One friend was offended by me calling a professor "hambeast" while another thought it was hilarious and added it to her vocabulary. You basically need to know your how your friends would react to it. Essentially I'd probably recommend not poking fun at it as LARPers tend to take it seriously . . . kinda like (ugh) furries. I hope this helps, heir to the Baskin Robbins fortune.
