Resident Evil 4 continued...
June 11, 2007

My previous post got buried so I made a new one to respond to the questions.

I am in the castle, and just ran into the room with the giant bug hive.

As for bullets, problems have been few and far between because I've been smashing everything in sight and picking enemies off with the pistol whenever possible. My point was that someone who isn't as careful will definitely run into a problem. Then again, I suppose that's their fault. I still wish the arms dealer would sell ammo though. I purchased the magnum early on, only to find that there is almost no ammo available.

I would still say that it's my favorite RE game thus far, but I wish the game had stuck with the open areas seen early on.

Pup, you goober! Did you get the free Broken Butterfly in the castle? I'm willing to bet Magnum ammo isn't very common because you have either most of or all the guns listed below:

-Pistol
-Shotgun
-Sniper Rifle
-TMP

I started getting more Magnum ammo than I knew what to do with on my third and subsequent go-aheads with the game.

Also, I think you're going to be in for a few more big surprises, so your opinion on the game may still change some!

Yeah, I got the free Broken Butterfly, but after I bought one already. Sigh...

My current weapon loadout is:
- Blacktail (pistol)
- Riot Gun (shotgun)
- Assault Rifle
- Broken Butterfly

You suggest that the appearance of ammo depends upon the weapons you're carrying, but I picked up hundreds of rounds for the TMP, despite never carrying the weapon.

I'm glad to hear that there's more good stuff to come, although I kind of suspected that. I plan on tackling a RE4 review, but don't worry, I'll be sure to give it a fair amount of time and some repeat play-throughs.

Hundreds of TMP rounds? I guess that makes sense since they usually appear in boxes carrying 50 rounds. But I kid you not. I have about 90+ Magnum rounds sitting in my inventory and every few times I reach the Merchant, I have to sell about 20 just to make sure I have enough room. Granted, the only guns I own are an Infinite Rocket Launcher, a Chicago Typewriter, and the Broken Butterfly maxed out.

You want to write a review for RE4; I want to write a review for RE4. That game already has a ton of reviews, but it's just too cool, at least from my experience, for me to not write about it.

TMP sucks. I just sell the ammo. Magnum I save strictly for later bosses. Man, I don't even upgrade any of my weapons unless I know I'll be sticking with it for the rest of the game and I do fine.

Incidentally I always thought replaying with the Chicago typewriter was boring as hell. I always just start from scratch.

Chicago Typewriter? Sounds interesting.

One of the things that I love about the RE games is how open they are to repeat plays. Most action/adventure games these days are too involved, or just not interesting enough to warrant that. I remember playing RE2 four times back to back without stopping. One of these days I still need to beat RE1 with Chris.

After playing RE4, I don't think I could ever go through an old RE game again without being disappointed. In fact, I remember going through RE2 last year with a friend, and we were just astonished at how out-dated it felt.

I re-started CV (which I never beat due to Dreamcast death) a few months back and was very sad.

I never like Codename Veronica. It may have had familiar characters and gameplay, but it felt way too cliche, especially the slow-mo cutscenes ala Matrix.

The only thing I remember about CV was initially going "OH WOW" at the "awesome lighter mechanics."

Resident Evil 2 will always be my favorite. I wish Capcom would do a remake of it, RE4-style. That would totally own.

Code Veronica, on the other hand, always felt too "soft" due to the lack of gore. That game really could have been rated Teen. It's still holds up pretty well compared to a lot of the other early REs, though.
