Varth

Has anyone heard of Varth, an old Arcade shooter from Capcom?

I was scrolling through the (disappointing) list of games on Capcom Classics Remixed for PSP and saw this one, and it looked like a cool 1941 clone so I figured I'd give it a shot.

Wow. I suck at shooters, but this is a crazy hard game.

After four hours, I am on stage 24. Which is a repeat of the stage 15 boss, who took me 47 tries to beat. And he's harder now. And my weapon's not as good. And planes don't give out extra bombs when you kill them now.

I'm probably not going to beat this one. :/

I took a bunch of pics for the arcade version. That game is crazy, but I like it a lot. But as you may agree, I think the game is just too lengthy. 30 stages is nuts, and I agree that it can get really difficult should you lose your weapons upgrades and have to battle a tough boss with your default armaments. It's still far more exciting than any 194X game I've played, though.

I usually don't mind a game that strives for length -- heck, in a shooter, having thirty levels would have me drooling.

In Varth's unfortunate case, Capcom seems to have copied one of Compile's lame tricks in recycling bosses late in the game. Truth to tell, I gave up on Varth come the second appearance of the locomotive boss... beating it the second time around is f***ing IMPOSSIBLE!
