Get 3D Classics: Kid Icarus with an Uprising pre-order in North America

Today Nintendo of America announced their own plans to give out free copies of the game. People who pre-order the upcoming sequel, Kid Icarus: Uprising, from "select retailers" will receive a download code for 3D Classics: Kid Icarus at purchase.

European and Japanese gamers who registered two select Nintendo games with Club Nintendo recently were rewarded with a free download of the 3D Classics version of the original NES Kid Icarus. US fans were, unfortunately, left out.

Today Nintendo of America announced their own plans to give out free copies of the game. People who pre-order the upcoming sequel, Kid Icarus: Uprising, from "select retailers" will receive a download code for 3D Classics: Kid Icarus at purchase.

On top of the obvious new 3D effect, 3D Classics: Kid Icarus also adds new, surprisingly non-NES-style backgrounds to prevent ghosting. (Anyone who has played Ocarina of Time 3D will tell you that 3D effects don't work well against on black backgrounds.)

There's still no announcement concerning if and when 3D Classics: Kid Icarus will be released for sale on the eShop in North America, but you can probably count on it happening eventually. Kid Icarus: Uprising launches in North America March 23rd.

Rhody likes to press the keys on his keyboard. Sometimes the resulting letters form strings of words that kind of make sense when you think about them for a moment. Most times they're just random gibberish that should be ignored. Ball-peen wobble glurk.

In PAL regions, we're getting a free download code for registering 2 valid games between November and sometime in the future. 2 games I already happened to register. Just waiting for them to email me my code.

So what are the new 3D effects on ol' Kid Icarus?

Sometimes I wonder if Nintendo couldn't honestly survive a full year of gaming just by releasing and/or touching up their entire best-of back catalog. Nostalgia alone would keep them in the running, I think.

The sprites and platforms and things just pop out against the background, which looks nicer than it sounds. I bought 3D Classics: Kirby's Adventure recently and was surprised by how nice it looked. The eShop trailer really didn't do it justice. It helps that the 3DS has the same vertical resolution as the NES.

@ vertical resolution: Really, it does? That's interesting. I didn't know that.
