Dead Space 3 has co-op because games are less scary with a friend

Like Resident Evil 5 without the racist overtones.

Dead Space and Dead Space 2 are two of this generation's few legitimately scary games. They might be a bit too scary for many players to handle, according to EA Marketing executive Laura Miele.

Ms. Miele says that's exactly why co-operative play is being introduced into the series with Dead Space 3. "We were hearing feedback that they love the thriller game, but it was pretty scary," she says, "and the obvious next step was that they wanted to play with someone. So we introduced co-op into the game."

She does go on to add that the third game in the series is "no less scary" and "true to its roots." Market research just shows that those scares are easier to take with a friend.

I understand that co-op isn't forced, which is nice. But did they really have to make the game look like a mix between Gears of War and Lost Planet? :/ I can already tell that scariness isn't going to be an issue. Actually, I'll be surprised if there are even any jump scares in this one.

Agreed. I think the day of the horror game may be dead. I'm not saying it can't rise up again from the grave, but for now, the genre is dead.

Horror games from AAA publishers that need their games to sell might be dead. Games like Amnesia and Lone Survivor, from indie developers, aren't going anywhere.

Don't get me wrong; Amnesia is great. It's also, what? Four years old?

It's two years old. And its sequel is negative one year old.
