Assassin's Creed film to star, be co-produced by Michael Fassbender
The Prometheus star was Ubisoft's "first choice."
Prometheus and X-Men: FIrst Class star Michael Fassbender will star in the film adaptation of Ubisoft's Assassin's Creed, reported Variety today. Fassbender, through his DMC Film company, will also co-produce the movie.
The casting, as well as the announcement of DMC Film's involvement, spells the end of the talks between Ubisoft and Sony, which was being considered to develop the films. But Ubisoft wanted more creative control, so the publisher's film arm, Ubisoft Motion Pictures, eventually went the indie route -- and it sounds like Fassbender may have had a lot to do with it.
"Michael Fassbender was our first choice," said Jean-Julien Baronnet, UMB's CEO. "[He] is an extremely smart, talented, versatile and committed actor."
Sony could still end up helping distribute the film(s), however, according to Variety. Ubisoft is also looking at financing options via foreign pre-sales and co-production deals -- which might include Sony too.
Further details on the film, like who exactly Fassbender would be playing (Desmond? Ezio? Altair?), or when it would be set were unavailable, but it's good to hear this Assassin's Creed is finally on the way. And with Ubisoft maintaining creative control, hey, the film might be better than Disney's adaption of Prince of Persia.
