Anarchy Reigns NA release "re-evaluated," moved back

Anarchy Reigns image

Sounds like it's coming after all. Eventually.

Just over a month before its previously confirmed North American release date of July 7th, Sega of America changed their listed date for Anarchy Reigns to "TBC" (or "to be confirmed"). Things were looking grim for Platinum's online brawler when E3 came and went and no mention was made of the game.

Sega's official Twitter account is now casually replying to tweets questioning the game's future with a hopeful message. "The release of Anarchy Reigns has been re-evaluated. We now expect to launch in Europe and America in Q1 of 2013." Perhaps they wanted to avoid the non-existent July game deluge.

While a 6+ month delay isn't exactly good news, any release is certainly better than none. The game's localization is reportedly completely finished already. (The demo released a few weeks ago includes the option to switch all menu, subtitle, and voice settings to English.)

So instead of releasing a niche game that SEGA likely feared would bomb during the summer drought, they're going to sit on it for at least 6 months and then release it against possibly Dead Space 3, Aliens: Colonial Marines, Tomb Raider, The Last of Us, Bioshock Infinite, and Metal Gear Rising? Seems like typical SEGA business sense.

Yup, pretty much. Sending it to die.

That would be pretty messed up if it was released around the same time as Metal Gear Rising, since the same dev team and all. And considering the game's big catch is that it's an online version of MadWorld, releasing it around all these other big releases is going to rob it of a decent community.

I don't know why they didn't just do a proper sequel to MadWorld instead.

Look at it this way: there's a greater chance now that it can also release around the time Nintendo publishes Project P-100 for Wii (also developed by Platinum Games), if Nintendo releases that game near the end of its launch window. Score!

Sounds like I'll be buying a lot of Platinum games in Q1 2013.
