Darksiders II will be a 'day one' Wii U title with enhanced controls

Whenever that "day one" is, of course...

Vigil Games confirmed yesterday that Darksiders II will be a "day one" Wii U title. You know, whenever that "day one" is.

The title is currently slated to launch on those other consoles on June 26. The Wii U, however, doesn't really have an exact release date; "2012" is still our only release indicator.

In any case, Darksiders II for Wii U is being developed alongside the other console versions, and a "small team" at Vigil Games is ensuring the Wii U controller is used in a "unique way," according to an interview Hayden Dalton, the game's lead designer, had with Digital Spy.

"That's been very interesting to see what those guys are doing, and they're making efforts to make sure we do use it in more than a slapdash way," he said. "It's basically the core game, but then with added abilities to do certain things that you can't do on the other consoles."

He didn't offer too many details aside from the ability to swap equipment on the fly using the Wii U's tablet controller instead of having to access a menu.

"That's huge; it's not breaking up the game in a way, I'm not going into a menu and assigning it," he said. "I'm literally just tapping as I'm playing."

I wouldn't say "huge," Mr. Dalton, but definitely "cool." Pretty cool.

What? You mean like a quick menu? That thing they've had around since Half Life 1?

I'm thinking it's more like what we see in Resident Evil Revelations or MGS3 on 3DS, where the whole menu is available on the second screen, but using it doesn't interrupt gameplay. Still not new, though...

Yeah, it seems a mite hilarious to laud your menu system as what's great about your game, in any case.

He's lauding it as one thing that's great about the Wii U port. Theoretically, the whole game is already awesome and this just pushes the Wii U version over the top. I do know that the menu on the touch screen angle worked REALLY well on Ocarina of Time 3D. It improves things rather nicely. You'd be surprised.

The touch screen menu was probably the best thing about Snake Eater 3D.

OKay, I'll buy that.
