Pokémon Black 2 and White 2 announced for DS

Pokémon Black Version 2 image

Nintendo announced a new Pokémon game over the weekend. Normally, each set of Pokémon games eventually gets a third version with new content. The most recent games in the series are Pokémon Black and White, but, surprisingly, the new game is not Pokémon Gray.

Instead, Black and White are getting direct sequels. Pokémon Black 2 and White 2 will feature new forms of legendary Pokémon Kyurmen (shown above), but nothing else is known. It's not clear if these games will take place in Unova, the world of their prequels, or a new area. This is the first time a Pokémon game has gotten a direct sequel like this, so there's not really much to base speculation on.

Even more surprising, these games will both be released for Nintendo's DS, not the 3DS as one might assume. Looks like that old handheld isn't dead yet.

Pokémon Black 2 and White 2 launch in Japan in June and North America and Europe in the fall.

It would take too long to port Black/White from the DS to the 3DS, and they want to get the deluxe versions out quickly, so they can start Generation 6, and have it released by 2013 for the 3DS.
