Fishing with Cocoto
May 27, 2008

Bought Cocoto Fishing Master? Been thinking of buying it? Never heard of it?I bought it. And so have three other people in the Candid Collectors' Union. So with this game sitting in my collection, and other people buying this game as well, I decided to check it.So I open the game and put the game in my PS2. I choose to start a new game, which is the only thing I can really do at this point. The game wants me to select a difficulty level. I've chosen "normal".A bit of backstory now. Geo, the king of gods ruled over the land he had created, until one day his evil son Zaron kicked him out. He took refuge in the Abyss kingdom and decided to sleep forever. He created a kettle to watch over him and put a fairy in charge of the kettle. He also created four little devils to help, and then disappeared. One day, the kettle started overflowing with lava. Only Cocoto, one of the devils, was able to stop it. And now he has gone in search of the sleeping god, but first he must find five 1000 year old fish. This will apparently help him find Geo.After that segment, the game begins.Cocoto is in his boat on a body of water. I cast the rod and Cocoto's assistant Fairy starts to provide gameplay help. A fish notices my bait. I must now convince the fish to bite down by following the fish with my bait. This seems simple enough. Oops! It got away.I cast again and manage to get the attention of a fish. This time, I manage to entice him to bite down. But I fail to "strike" the fish at the right time and it gets away.A few more tries and finally a successful strike. I start to reel in the fish, but the line breaks and the fish gets away. Two failed attempts later, I'm out of bait. Fairy tells me that I can buy bait at Neuro's shop. I take her advice and go in search of the shop. The boat moves pretty slow. I guess Cocoto doesn't want to scare away the fish. I eventually find Neuro. I can buy more bait if I have diamonds. Unfortunately, I have none. I can get diamonds by selling fish to Baggy. I'll keep that in mind for later.I switch to startfish bait. Hopefully I'll have better luck with this than the seahorse bait. Striking seems to be more difficult, but I do eventually manage to hook a large fish and start to reel it in. As I do, an on-screen meter fills up. If it gets full, the line will break and the fish will get away. Yes! I caught it. It is a macracanthus, and it weighs 67.41 pounds. Nice.I have decided to quit for now, so I save the game and return to the main menu. The option to continue my adventure is now available. Before leaving, I decide to check how much space it uses on my memory card. Apparently it uses 108 KB, which is much less than the 8 MB reported on the back  of the box. The save file is represented by a dancing Cocoto. Weird. So far, the game seems to be pretty good. Nothing is broken, at least. It looks to be a fun little diversion. I'll know a bit more after I've spent some more time with it.

You should review it. It sounds like a strange game, and it's also nice to have knowledge about under-covered/unknown games.

I'll probably write a review when I'm finished. I have a few other reviews to write first though.
And I need to figure how to get games added to the HG database...

The easiest way to get games added to the database is to go here.
