Captain America KICKS ASS.

Civil War is rocking the house.

Okay, let me fill you in on what’s going. The first issue of Civil War came out yesterday. Awesome stuff. In a nutshell:

-This team of superheroes called the New Warriors got in a fight, and they would up destroying a school and killing a bunch of kids.
-The superhero community is getting mad flak for this, and there’s major talk of having all the superheroes registered.
-Some heroes are for it, some heroes are against it. Iron Man leads the ‘for it’ side, Captain America leads the ‘against it’ side.
-The Human Torch got beat up outside a club by some angry clubbers.
-Tony (Iron Man) got spit in the face by an angry mother of one of the dead children.

NOW.

None of this is the highlight. The absolute best part of this issue has to be when Captain America kicks straight-up ass and decides to go against the government. The scene: Captain America is on the SHIELD helicarrier, and SHIELD’s current boss (Fury is missing) asks him to help with the anti-superhero force that they’re putting together to stop superheroes who don’t accept the Registration Act. Cap says no. They bring in a bunch of guys with tranquilizers to take Cap down so he doesn’t rally against their cause…and this is what happens.

Cap'n America is one of the lamest super-hereos IN THE WORLD, and I vastly preferred the arc where he molecularly degenerates and has to be kept frozen in a glass coffin for hairy-assed fool Wolvy to angst over now and then. Granted, the pint-sized whiner had to stand on a box to see into it, but the point stands!

Where's Fury? I could aways stand him.

I like Captain America, personally. He's a great fighter, great leader, and he's got this whole gung-ho soldier attitude to him that really works. I realize he has the whole super-propaganda thing going on, and he was like that orginally, but he has moved away from that greatly since his old days. He's always been more about ideals (life, liberty, all that stuff) than the actual government things; he's split away from the US and denounced his name more times than I care to count. When he's written right, he's an interesting and respectable character who's always been a help despite his lack of powers, like Batman without being a jackass.

Except I never asked who Otis Redding was. I basically gave the notion I didn't really care who he was where as you have actually questioned who Captain Kangaroo is. HA!

Given the nature of these convoluted comic book stories, I would guess that Fury was shot into space by a kitten who's possessed by the ghost of Doctor Doom's clone's wife's sister's pet rock, who is in actuality an incarnation of a Greek god who travelled through time to stop Mr. Sinister from cloning Plato; all of the above is probably part of some subplot who's aim is to undo an 1981 X-Men story arc in which Wolverine sliced off one of Cyclop's fingers.

^^ Hm...that's not a half-bad story.

It really is quite complex, though, and it would take me a ridiculously long time. Maybe I'll go more in-depth on Monday (maybe a 'What's Fury Up To' blog post or something) but the gist is this:

-There was this 'Secret War' that involved a bunch of the top-tier superheroes fighting some ugly chick in...Russia, I think.
-Nick Fury mind-wiped the heroes so they'd forget.
-HYDRA has started to take over SHIELD from the inside, and Fury had to go into hiding because of it. (that chick in the above scans in the current head of SHIELD)
-Spider-Woman I is the a double-agent working for HYDRA. Only she's really working for Fury. Only she's really working for HYDRA. Only she's really working for Fury.

Like I said, complex.
