Wondering...
April 13, 2006

I've been thinking lately...maybe I'm too positive.

I'm probably a little too positive in life overall, but right now I'm thinking more on the review front. Like, take for instance, GUN. I loved GUN. I mean, I really loved GUN. But then I hear about other playing it, and they say it's shit. And, let's say for instance, my Suikoden Tactics review. Didn't exactly love it, but didn't think it was crap, either, and I'm in the minority with that. And, most recently, my Kingdom Hearts II review. I wrote that knowing that, somewhere along the line, someone would call the game and my review of it gay. And, lo and behold, a discussion about Brokeback Mountain breaks out in which Guts', jackass that he is, says the game sounds like 'ultimate gay', which is pretty easy to link to the way I described it.

Now, I think Guts is a total fucking prick, and I don't base that of his review skills or anything. But he's a total fucking prick with an opinion, and it's an opinion that I seem to get a lot of. A lot of people seem to like my reviews, just totally disagree with them.

I guess that's good, it's straight that I'm at least getting my format right and no one's accusing me of 'cookie cutter' reviews and whatnot, because that's something I'm really looking to avoid. But, at the same time, I don't want to just sound good, I want people to be able to rely on my opinion. Because, you know, I think that's what reviewing should be about: Half of it should be giving fellow gamers advice on game selection, half of it should focus on doing that is as original a way as possible. Having the second half is nice, but I don't want to gain a rep over time that labels me as a reviewer who just gives out high grades to everything that passes his way. Because, eventually, that'll mark me as a sellout, and I would straight up hate that.

So, I don't know. Maybe I should go on a hard streak, review games that are...just...harder. Like something that's a bit on the fringe, not a huge game. Something heavy on violence. Another FPS, maybe. I'd just hate to get to the point where people see a review for a 'pussy' game (games that are just automatically marked as lame shit by a lot of people, like Pokemon XD and Kingdom Hearts) on the front page and just start guessing it's me who did it...and they're right. I should switch things up more, I think. I don't know. Paranoid.

Also, on an unrelated note, my music teacher rocks. He's turning me on to some cool music.

Jesus, I can't believe I left the running of my faction to you!

GUN is a strange kind of game; people are going to be split over it. I myself thought it ended before it hit its stride, others didn't. Some people are going to disagree with any review you, me or anyone else may write at any time, espicially when it's a hit-or-misser like GUN.

KH2 contains Simba. You probably have to hug him at some point. It's an easy target for ridicle, especially since it seem James Woods isn't in there this time around.

James Woods rocks. But I disgres.

As long as what YOU wrote represents and explains the opinion YOU have, your review is correct regardless of what others say. Unless it's a Chrono Cross review above, say, 4.

Just for kicks, pen a few bash reviews if you're worried about being overly prasing. I can loan you a copy of CC if you want a good place to start!

Gah, you're still around!

And I don't know, I just tend to obsess over things like that. I guess you're right.

Though, for the record, there is no Simba hugging. There is some Tron hugging, to be fair, but only once.

To be honest after reading your KH review the game sounds like it sucks big time, but that isn't your fault. The problem is the subject matter is something that I have no interest in, and I thought it was retarded way before I even read your review (however I thought the review was well done). If I was into RPGs, Square, and Disney I would've ran out and bought the game right now.

I don't think you should change your reviewing style or topics. You should stick with what you're comfortable with, whether it's RPGs, FPS, RTS, platformers, or whatever. Don't forget no one here has the same opinion on certain types of games. To be honest I don't think anyone has the same taste in games as me (I think besides Venter I'm the only one here who thinks CC is better than a 5). I just wouldn't advise reviewing something like Pokemon or Kingdom Hearts for a competition becuase you might run into this problem.

And you actually consider Black Sabbath to me "cool music"?

LOL @ Black Sabbath

I like it...

I kinda have wide tastes in music, though.

Pharrell Williams is the man. I don't know why but I respect him.

I got sick of everything and stopped going to the nightly reviewer chats a long time ago. The people were good, but there was a lot of drama with reviewing that seems all just a little silly now to me. Now I write reviews without worrying what other people are going to think of them. Generally, this is working well for me.

Give "With Strength I Burn" a spin sometime.

Do not listen to booberry. I have reason to believe he likes EMO nerd metal.

You listen to Coldplay. Never post again.
Genj Genj - April 17, 2006 (07:43 AM)
Coldplay is loved by many people (including Jon Stewart). Every metal fan I've met is a fat sweaty nerd that sometimes enjoys LARPing and/or writing fan fic about dragons. There was one exception with a skinny Asian kid, but I don't think he should count because he only listened to The Number of the Beast constantly and thought Led Zeppelin was one guy.

Many people also voted George Bush into office twice. Your argument doesn't hold weight like I do.
Genj Genj - April 17, 2006 (05:18 PM)
Bush supporters don't count as people.
