I…don’t get it.

Okay, a few days ago, a friend of mine showed my a YTMND that had a picture of Ronald McDonald with a turban flying one of the 9/11 planes through New York City. My friend thought it was funny, but me…I wasn’t laughing. My friend just wrote, claimed to be naturally irreverent. I just sort of…dismissed it, I guess, and left it at that.

I’ve been thinking about it for the past few days, and it occurred to me how full of horse manure stuff like that is. I mean, maybe it’s just me, maybe it’s just the way that I was taught, but when is making fun of the horrible deaths of over 1,000 people considered not only acceptable, but funny, too? When did we cross that line?

The example above isn’t the only one, either. I hang out of the comic boards, and I saw this modified picture posted of a man jumping out of the Twin Towers. For those who don’t know, when the planes hit the Twin Towers, the people who were caught in the blast and managed to survive but couldn’t escape were so racked with the heat that some of them actually opted to jump from the building instead of burning to death. I remember seeing a documentary that followed a group of firefighters who went into the Twin Towers to rescue people, and I remember hearing the sound of people hitting the ground in that documentary, and I have to say it’s a sound I’ll never forget.

So how was this picture modified? It had a picture of a man jumping form the flames, with a word bubble asking “How do I make webs, Spidey’ and a caption of Spider-Man saying “I dunno lol”. And people responded to the picture with ‘LOL’.

Am I the only person who sees how extremely fucked up that is?

Freedom of Speech, whatever. Yes, people have the right to do stuff like that. But that doesn’t mean they should. At some point common decency should come into play. I mean, it doesn’t matter your religion or whatever, unless you live in some seriously messed up place and you’re screwed in the head, people have an idea of what constitutes right and wrong. Innocent people dying is sad. Making fun of innocent people dying is wrong. I just do not get how anyone with enough basic intelligence to do something like that could be so low in conscience that he’d think trivializing in such a way would be funny. And I’m also appalled that anyone would prove him right. I remember my friend, when I brought up the YTMND recently, justified it by saying some thing along the lines of ‘Making fun of tragic death is always funny!”

SINCE THE FUCK WHEN? The last time I checked it was horrible and terribly disrespectful to not only the people who died, but their grieving families. If I had a loved one who died at 9/11 and I saw something like that, I would be PISSED, and I’ve every right in the world to be. Some things just aren’t funny and aren’t supposed to be funny.

And it was just as tasteless and insensitive as the picture you saw. I suppose mockery is one way to deal with a tragedy of this magnitude, and it takes a very twisted sense of humor to "appreciate" it.
