I finally played Lego Star Wars (a demo of II on the 360), and I was darn disappointed. I had been admiring the series from afar since the first one came out and seemed so endearing and the second one got really good reviews, way too good for LSW to be just a simple little game with simple controls and simple objectives. But that demo suggests that's exactly what Lego Star Wars is. Maybe it picks up, don't know, but running around using "force powers" on trash cans to collect coins is lame. Also, not everything was made of Lego! The characters and things strewn around the landscaper were, but not the buildings...as a former Lego fanatic, that bothered me.
I had way too much fun with Just Cause. Like hijacking a helicopter and taking it up to 1500 feet, then jumping out, falling 1000 feet, and jumping into another helicopter, one with missiles and machines guns. I can see the action getting repetitive, but I have no idea why people say this game looks like crap; the 360 version is shiny and detailed, and the island on which the game is set is really big.
The new Sonic the Hedgehog is very much like the Sonic sections of the Dreamcast games, but somehow worse (although thank the gods they finally got rid of Rogue the Bat and Big the Cat and any other stupid animal and his stupid levels). The demo level didn't have much personality...it felt like a level out of Super Monkey Ball or Marble Blast Ultra, smooth and pretty but bland and floating in space. And please, Sega, work on the pathetic camera. If any game needs a good camera, it's a fast paced one.
Fuzion Frenzy II looks like another enjoyable party game for a system that doesn't have one. Wish they had included better and more minigames with the demo, but I think we know what to expect in the full version. It's always nice to have a Mario Party or something in the collection, although there's no way in hell I'd pay $60 for this. Here's hoping MS puts it at $40.
I was skeptical of how Doom had aged, if it was really worth 5 or 6 bucks. There have a billion games since that inundate the player with big guns and bigger enemies, but it only took ten seconds for me to remember why Doom was the one to kick it all off. Most things exceeded my expectations, especially the crispness of the visuals. Pixellated, yes, but not bad, not bad at all. It's aged, but Doom still has that AAA title feel; maybe it's just nostalgia, but I'm into it.

janus - October 03, 2006 (03:09 PM) Doom will always be an AAA title. Hell, the music on its own beats most modern FPS soundtracks. Ultra Violence = AWESOME. |

jeeeehad - October 03, 2006 (06:02 PM) Yeah, the music does rock. I downloaded Doom with my neighbor, and as we started to play I did a little air guitar during the hot riff in the first level song. He looked at me and said, "The fact that you know this song this well after ten years is a little scary." |

Halon - October 03, 2006 (10:58 PM) The original Fuzion Frenzy was pretty lame. I reviewed it in 2003, and it's posted on HG under grassroots if anyone is interested. EDIT: Just a heads up, I was like 16 when I wrote it so it probably sucks really bad. |

silverishness - October 27, 2006 (06:27 AM) I still know the original Pokemon theme song by heart. Sometimes, I burst out into it for no apparent reason. ...Then it scares me when people join in. o.0 |
