Sudden Switch 2
January 14, 2026

I recall that I was soundly against the idea of buying the Switch 2, and looking back I can see why. I'm not sure much has changed, except that it is everything we hoped the Switch would be at launch, and much more.

It's a performer: Everything feels smooth, games load quickly, I haven't noticed a single issue with OG Switch titles. They run better than they did on the Switch, and unless it's rose tinted googles, they look and sound better. They don't, naturally, but overall the Switch 2 is a superior experience. Yeah, it's a tad uncomfortable as a handheld in terms of size, but boy that's a nice lookin' screen.

But I'm not reviewing it. I decided we would make the jump after my wife agreed to the idea, which was her vote first, mine after hers. We traded in our Switch, a few games and got the Switch 2 for a bangin' good deal on Black Friday, including Memory Card and Mario Kart World. We also got Super Mario Party Jamboree for Christmas. We wouldn't have made the leap otherwise.

So I've got some new reviews on the way. Yeah, so, Happy New Year to y'all. I know things are a mess out there, but here's to taking care of the people we love.

When I picked up my Switch 2, I got it with Mario Kart World, Mario party Jamboree (because somehow, I had managed picking that one up on the original Switch), and Donkey Kong Bananza. They're all plenty enjoyable, though each of those games have their fans who like them more than I do. My wife and I have also gone back to play the Switch golf game featuring Mario and friends. And I've played rather a lot of Pokemon Legends: Z-A. Which I also find quite enjoyable. As you say, it's good hardware. I like it exactly as much as I expected to all along, and I look forward to the games that will no doubt come along in future years to further justify my purchase.

Honestly, one of the games I'd most like to play on it is Tears of the Kingdom, but I haven't bought the upgrade yet. I know I will eventually, because I've seen video of how much faster that game loads and that's the kind of difference that excites me, even more than the slightly improved visuals.

I'm glad you made the leap. The Switch 2 really is a slick system, and I'm satisfied with it -almost- completely. I've found it to be a little picky about power, and I had to have it serviced for failure to detect Wifi, but I consider that to be a minor quibble, considering how good the customer service was.

I have spent some time in Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom and I can say that it's amazing I ever managed with the Switch. It is so much easier to play them both with a consistent framerate, and certainly what feels like better frame times, as well. The Switch 2 just isn't sweating it out like the Switch did.

The prospects of what Nintendo can and will do with it are exciting, since no one else is likely to make as good use of the hardware. I can see why Nintendo didn't make the shift to hall effect analogs for the joycons. Who wants to pick up a dead controller that's been sitting for a while with the hall effect joystick sapping power?

I think that Nintendo is actually striking a good balance in terms of game quality, value and professional ethics. Everything is getting expensive and prices haven't gone up in a good long while. We're fortunate to have such a flexible price proposition as gamers.
