Ever try to tie your shoes without any energy?
March 25, 2018

I have been sick for the last month, less and more sick than I have been in the last, maybe, ten years? The very idea of mustering energy to do anything more strenuous than manipulate a controller (or two, more on that in a moment) has sent be straight to bed. Really.

Boy am I glad I got a Nintendo Switch. It's been my best console purchase decision since the PlayStation 2. My PS3? You mean the one whose motherboard I have to bake in order to... forget it. Not happening. Thank you Nintendo for getting this one so very right!

That means of course all of the writing I expected to do went up in smoke. I'm going to be working sooner than I'll be writing, but hopefully I'll be writing not long after. We'll see... my day to day energy level is still the pits. Or in the pits. Whatever, I don't like pits.

May I take a moment to gush about Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild? Straight up my favorite game since Link to the Past! I know everyone says that, but it's true! I was a little skeptical. I told myself, "I'll just get the armor I need". Then I started playing. Yeah, that's one addictive collect-a-thon.

There are literally less than a dozen games I have wanted to complete 100%, and no, Chrono Trigger is not one of them. I'm happy with the "best" ending, thanks. The developers didn't impress me on a personal level. I digress, but the fact of the matter is that BOTW had me hooked from moment one. I'm eagerly anticipating Mario Odyssey when I do pick that up, and I'm not the completionist type. Nor am I really much of a Mario guy. I wasn't into Mario 64, but I did like Sunshine.

Anyway, point is, I haven't accomplished all that I set out to, but I have picked up the pace on some things left behind. My Sliver of Light novels have their first complete, compiled volume in the form of A Coiled Majesty. Cover art's in the works with

I've been sick most of this year, so I definitely sympathize. There were stretches here and there of a week or two where I couldn't even contemplate doing anything I didn't absolutely have to do. I was sick not with one bug, but with several different ones I caught one after the other. Being a cashier will do that to you. It will expose you to every nasty thing that's going around, and my immune system never got strong enough--even with help from vitamins and such--to prevent me from catching whatever came through next.

Anyway, I look forward to seeing a return of your more active side, as your health allows it. And I'm glad you're enjoying Breath of the Wild. I think that one caught a lot of folks by surprise. We expected it to be good, but it's so much more than just "good."

The irony of my illness is that it happened just less than a week after I finished work for Amazon, and apparently - like you - I did catch what was going around. It seems this variant has actually killed over a hundred people, and it's not difficult to understand how that's possible. I'm glad you're still kickin'; I recently re-read most of my reviews (and edited the sub-headings out of them all) and have come to a finer appreciation of the impact you've had on the quality of my work. Thank you for that.

Breath of the Wild really did blindside us, didn't it? Nintendo has the extraordinary capability of making what would otherwise be mundane concepts and game mechanics into addictive, share worthy game play. You'd better believe I have a lively wishlist of known good and looking good titles to stock up on. I really have to say that Stardew Valley seems to have found its home on the Switch, just as a number of others are.

If there was a time for Nintendo to start porting classic RPGs (for example) like Chrono Trigger, now is definitely it! There are games that absolutely need to be available on the Switch. Players are realizing that this full blooded console experience can literally outnumber its competitors in a single home and provide portability that they cannot match.

Seriously, if graphic fidelity spelled out the future of games so clearly, we wouldn't have Doom, Kings Quest, Fallout, Mario and more as industry staples. Yes they were cutting edge at some point, but they retained the characteristics of the limitations that formed them, and have formed the basis of a lively retro and remaster development and entertainment scene. Just look at how disastrous it was for Megaman X to eschew the side scrolling style ascribed by the limits of the SNES hardware.

Breath of the Wild embraces its limitations and makes excellent use of the hardware strengths of the Switch, a quality that has defined Nintendo since its inception. We only have more to look forward to. In fact, my nephew now owns a Switch, and having spent some time with him playing Arms, I look forward to more Nintendo branded multiplayer fun.

Sorry VR, exciting though you may be, you're just not the everyplayer experience, not when your accessories sell for just less than the price of an entire console that is socially connective and easily as engaging.

So yeah, Nintendo has the goods. Once again Sony and Microsoft have got to be wondering why their high performance appeals haven't struck the gold they hoped for. Performance doesn't sell games; fun does, and that is something of which Sony and Microsoft have demonstrated a limited understanding over their multi-hit many-award decorated histories. The NES/Famicom were underdogs for years before the SNES literally redefined expectations, just as the Switch is doing now.

Certainly more than just "good."
