Recent Asian films seen:
Maborosi (Kore-eda, 1994) - Becomes my favorite film ever, visually (maybe along with Millennium Mambo). The final "funeral" scenes were in particular incredible. Wasn't really emotionally connected to it as I think I was supposed to be. I adored the film regardless. A+
After Life (Kore-eda, 1998) - Slightly disappointing coming immediately after Maborosi, maybe even a little boring at times. Still really, really liked it for reasons I'm not aware of. I just greatly enjoy Kore-eda's unique brand of "minimalism" (poor word), which is so distinct from someone like Tsai. B+
Doppelganger (Kurosawa, 2003) - Really silly, really enjoyable. I hope the whole film is intended as a comedy, as I was laughing all the way through it. I actually think it is, too. B+
Sansho the Steward (Mizoguchi, 1954) - Not much to say about this film that hasn't been said already. Zushio's (the lead character) actor is terrible, yet it hardly even mattered. The final scene is what raises the film to the level of "extraordinary". I now understand the adoration for Mizoguchi after the slight let-downs of Ugetsu and Gion Festival Music. A
Evil Brain from Outer Space (1956) - Funniest thing I've ever seen, bar-none. n/a

pup - January 09, 2008 (11:51 PM) Maybe it's your thing and maybe it's not, but I recently enjoyed Save the Green Planet. It's not the easiest movie to find offline, but it's worth it. |

forweg - January 11, 2008 (11:53 PM) Thanks for the recommendation. I'm usually biased against anything remotely martial arts or action-based, but this looks just weird enough to be enjoyable. I'll add it to my Netflix queue. |
