For me, this was one of those "dodged a bullet" games. Since, when I was young, we got our gaming info from various magazines, I remember having one that had a few pages on the NES port and I thought the imagery with the large faces and stuff looked super cool and I really wanted it.

But I never got it and then read about it much later on. And, if you notice, in roughly 20 years of reviewing games in an era with the Internet and emulation, this "MUST GET" game of my youth has never crossed my radar, even for a quickie "rainy day" review project.

I actually think I kinda prefer the NES version, though it's been ages since I played it. That one does away with the dull side-scrolling levels and instead throws you into horizontal flight segments with even stranger content. It's almost like it was channeling Life Force or Abadox.

I think even the NES version is one of Capcom's older games, developed before Natsume made Abadox. I'm too lazy to check the dates, but I think that's the order. One of them most likely inspired the other, though. Game development times were a lot shorter then.

"What if everything you see is more than what you see--the person next to you is a warrior and the space that appears empty is a secret door to another world? What if something appears that shouldn't? You either dismiss it, or you accept that there is much more to the world than you think. Perhaps it really is a doorway, and if you choose to go inside, you'll find many unexpected things." - Shigeru Miyamoto on secret doors to another world2

I'm pretty sure this game came before Abadox. I'm not very good at keeping my release chronology in line.
