Even A Link to the Past was simplistic, and all but "confusing" for me, as I was entering my teen years.
And I am no master of videogames.

A really wits-challenging Zelda, staying within the 2D games, was Capcom's phenomenal The Minish Cap; if you want to get to every area, and collect everything, that one's a tough cookie for real.
