Gameboy homebrew has been surprisingly active in the past few years. There's an easy to work with visual IDE (GB Studio) that builds roms even without scripting or ASM skills, and a lot of these new bite sized GB games are made with it. GB has also seen a huge resurgance in parts and modding, with readily available and cheap flash carts and IPS displays.

Unfortunaly, I haven't played a modern GB game that I felt was very good. GB Studio doesn't produce very efficient code and I think it shows in the games it builds. Even so, I think it's great to see people excited about Gameboy!

Yeah, I don't know that I'd care to try the game myself (I tend to spend my time focusing more on licensed releases, which obviously stopped arriving years ago), but it was interesting enough that I decided to report on it since yesterday was a remarkably slow news day compared to normal. I've been on the developer's mailing list for some time but hadn't reported on any of their releases, so the time felt right and this game doesn't look half bad as these things go.

"What if everything you see is more than what you see--the person next to you is a warrior and the space that appears empty is a secret door to another world? What if something appears that shouldn't? You either dismiss it, or you accept that there is much more to the world than you think. Perhaps it really is a doorway, and if you choose to go inside, you'll find many unexpected things." - Shigeru Miyamoto on secret doors to another world2
