Please tell me that quote at the end of the first paragraph is a literal quote and not a paraphrase. That's just too good.

I don't really follow Falcom's stuff, but was surprised to learn this belongs to the same series as Faxanadu on the NES. Until today, I never even noticed the name "Xanadu" hiding in Faxanadu.

Alas, no. But the situation is pretty comical. The military turn up with specially trained operatives, specifically made firearms with massive damage capabilities and, because this is the Japan military, full on battle mech armour. The they decide to fight a side threat offscreen while the kids are sent in to the massive, dangerous dungeon crawl.

There was also a Xanadu released for the N-Gage, but it did get a Steam port much later on. I own it, and plan to play it someday.

FAmicom XANADU. It's right there in the title, plain as day (I say, as someone who never noticed that connection either).

"What if everything you see is more than what you see--the person next to you is a warrior and the space that appears empty is a secret door to another world? What if something appears that shouldn't? You either dismiss it, or you accept that there is much more to the world than you think. Perhaps it really is a doorway, and if you choose to go inside, you'll find many unexpected things." - Shigeru Miyamoto on secret doors to another world2

It's a common theme in the Trails series, our protagonists (Bracers, Cops, Students) absolutely trouncing the military in any encounter they have.
