How did I miss this the first time around?!

Good review, even if I mostly disagree. I think DDII got lots of praise in its day. A few things, then. I know it's not legit, but there were well known codes you could input to continue an unlimited number of times. Also, the opening song was awesome! "Unleashing the Ogre" was level two's theme in the arcade, but levels 1 and 2 had their tracks flipped for the NES version for some reason.

I agree with you on the single plane elements being very, very stupid. I seem to recall a tight ass hallway with Abobo types set up and ready to suplex you endlessly. But I think the general feeling I got while playing was that your hyper knee/uppercut and cyclone kick attacks were so overpowered that you could just crush even the stronger enemies as soon as they appeared -- that goes for the annoying helicopter guys too. The hyper moves specifically are equalizers for the wake-up game: you can knee a dude into oblivion immediately after being knocked down.

I think what annoyed me more than anything, was something that I think didn't bother you: having to press A + B together to jump. So imprecise. Finally, I don't know if you had anyone to play with before reviewing, but of course that affects the fun factor quite a bit.

Anyway, an interesting (CONTROVERSIAL?!), well written take.

Actually, I could have sworn you replied to this review when I submitted it, back when the site had a different comment system. Disqus? I think I recall your love of the game's music, too. If that was someone else, then this is a weird coincidence.

But glad you liked the review! It's been a minute, so I had to reread the review to fully grasp what parts you were talking about. The single-plane segments frustrated me to no end! As for jumping, I think I had an issue with it at first, but I found a "rhythm" after a few tries. It was still somewhat of a problem, but I guess it wasn't worth mentioning in the review.

On a personal note, I find the timing of this reply to this specific game to be humorous, considering I'm about to submit something in about a week...
