Nice review, Jason, and I mostly agree with you. I liked this game a lot, and you're right about a ton of the weapons feeling useless, and progression being less than smooth at times - still it's a nice, modern tribute to the game that popularized the genre and continues to be the best the genre has to offer (yes, Super Metroid).

Thanks for reading, Marc, and I'm glad you also enjoyed the game. I don't have much else to say except that I agree with you agreeing with me. ;-)

"What if everything you see is more than what you see--the person next to you is a warrior and the space that appears empty is a secret door to another world? What if something appears that shouldn't? You either dismiss it, or you accept that there is much more to the world than you think. Perhaps it really is a doorway, and if you choose to go inside, you'll find many unexpected things." - Shigeru Miyamoto on secret doors to another world2

"Some players have even done it in half that number, and there's also a trophy awarded if you manage to clear the campaign without dying. An auto-save feature forces you to play fair, too, so good luck with that."

I admit I struggled to see the point to the auto-save at every player's death in a game like this (not a rogue-like RPG or strategy game).
It's striking that a feature was put in the game with specifically speedruns in mind.

" It's clear that Happ's primary source of inspiration was Super Metroid, not anything with whips and swords that followed."

It's a de facto Super Metroid mod, and what I find very appreciable is it never tries to hide it. Contrary: from the first steps, it says: I am a Super Metroid mod. That's a brave attitude, because, I think, implies a kind of "And I think I can do better, or not worse, than Super Metroid did" statement.
