You see, rather than frighten me, this kind of thing has me questioning the motives of characters you do not actually exist.

Suskie apparently isn't very good at planning things out, or he wouldn't have subbed this review right before his mod privileges had been taken away. Now he can't fix errors like that. If I were Suskie, I'd probably wish some kindly mod would change that "you" to "who" to help a poor ex-mod out.

Thanks to whoever fixed it.

I can’t fault ID Software for copying the successes of other (better) games, but I can fault them for writing BURN on a wall in blood and expecting us to wet our wants.

Well, not to be annoying, but that seems to be another typo Mr. Suskie missed before losing his mod powers. Would someone be so kind? Lord knows he'd be haunted for all eternity if a typo like that went without correction.

This one, too:

This kind of jump-in-your-seat shock isn’t hard you pull off.

I'm just looking out for my good friend Suskie.

Something stinks about this topic, and it's not me.

Hello, my fellow in-joke alt. Isn't it awesome that not everyone here knows why we exist?

Haha. Wow, it's assy! =D

(PS - very subtle, Billy... >__>)

Anyway, this is a good review. Didn't grab me like your Far Cry one did, though, but that's probably because this is a bash. THe writing's good, though, and the descriptions and argument sound. The only problem I have with it is the conclusion again. Felt tacked on... but, it's not as big a deal here for some reason.

Good job, though. I'm glad you had fun writing this one.

I don't know, I kind of like it this way. Kind of vague and subliminal. Very Metal Gear Solid.

A three? You tough cookie. Your BioShock review seems glowing now!

It's a 6 or 7 in my eyes, but it does have the one enormous flaw of making its opening hour by far the most atmospheric in the game.

After that it's a solid yet dated blaster that's too dark for the player to see anything.

Last typo fixed.

3 almost doesn;t sound low enough for Doom 3, but, on my side, for very different reasons. Solid review, but I'm happy it still leaves room for my eventual write up to be penned. Coming 2011.

When are people going to understand that the score doesn't matter? That the score is only relevant to the context of what is said in the review and to the reviewer's own opinion? Take it with a grain of salt. The score is the most useless part of the review for every review, including even the ones that make a big deal about it being more than what it is.

Or at least that's how I see it.

Oh, I agree. It's just an easy way of saying "I hate Doom 3", in this case.

Works better for quick arguments' sake as well. I could, of course, have written above: "I found Doom 3 to be roughly twice and a bit as good as you think it is."

To, I would imagine. >_>

It does not work that way, Lewis, as I do not know you well enough to what a 6 or 7 means for you. It would be much clearer to say that you liked Doom 3 twice as much as Suskie, because then you would have set your opinion more clearly as to how much you enjoyed the game. All I'm saying is that different numbers can have different meanings for different people, but thorough written analysis is far easier to understand since it explains itself when presented in a clear, concise manner, as opposed to a number score that can just feel arbitry and leave plenty of room for interpretation.

I agree with Felix on why scoring sucks, since one score from somebody might not mean the same from someone else. For instance I interpret a 5/10 as average but some people see a 7/10 as average. So I could give a game a 6 that would be better than someone else's 7.

However, I'm one of the few people on this site who didn't think Doom 3 was horribly offensive. Probably a 5 or 6 overall; basically an average game with a few cool atmospheric bits. I wish they stuck with the more mindless shooting formula because the game was kind of boring and not something that will ever be replayed.

I did try Doom 3 but I wasn't able to darken my room enough to make out what was happening on the screen. That may be the point, but I prefer seeing what I'm doing to at least an extent. If Fatal Frame can do it then so can Doom.

You know there's at least three places you can adjust the gamma, brightness and contrast of your display, right? Two of them are even software.

But by doing that you ruin the effect. Basically Doom 3 relied on its darkness to create the sense of fear... but by doing so they made the game barely playable in some areas. Nasty design choice - but I did still enjoy my time romping through the game.

I think I tweaked them some but never really found a comfortable setting. This was a while ago, though, and I picked up my own copy last year. When I get around to it, I'll see what I can do.

Hey now. There's some line break error in the first paragraph that wasn't there before! Will this review never be perfect?
