Thought it was fine. Maybe a bit too many space battle scenes.

Liked that they fleshed out Poe's character this time. Actually, I'm surprised how developed they made him in a film where tons of other stuff is happening. Went from a hot-headed, but well-meaning, pilot who constantly thought blowing stuff up all the time was the solution, to knowing better by the end of the film. (continued below)

"Pros/Cons" (like for real spoilers now)

-I thought the Super Space Leia scene was HILARIOUS.

-Kylo Ren continues to whine about everything. At the very least, please don't whine as much in Episode 9.

-Captain Phasma is officially the most useless character in the new Star Wars movies. The Traitor Thief did more damage to the rebellion than she did in these last two movies! And all he did was give away information! She dead? If she actually died, then jeez...

-Had zero issues with Luke passing on. At least he did it gracefully. It tied into the whole notion that these movies shouldn't completely revolve around the Jedi. If you watched the original trilogy, they were never the full focus. They were just part of a bigger story. I mean, yeah, they're cool and all, but...

-Kylo Ren's whining. It never ends.

-But seriously, probably my biggest gripe is the middle part, where Finn and the woman went to Gambling Planet, simply because it felt like a waste of film. Dragged on too long. And when the woman freed the enslaved animal and said "Now it was worth it." I immediately thought, "Yeah... but, they could easily capture them all again. Doesn't seem that hard with their technology..."

-Edit: I just realized something - there was a surprising lack of Stormtroopers in this movie. The only time I remember them is when they were all gathered for the execution.

-Edit 2: And yeah, after reading/listening to other in-depth reviews of the movie, Poe pretty much doomed the whole crew for the duration of the plot with refusing to follow orders at the start of the film. Laura Dern's character wasn't any better for not setting Poe to the side and telling him what her actual plan was. >_>

-But yeah, it was fine. Not bad, not great, just fine. Thought it was better than Episode 7, aka A New Hope Part 2.

(in response to Venter's January 15th post, dunno why my date is messed up...)

I think my biggest issue with Finn's segment in the movie on the planet is that it felt weirdly out of place within the context of the movie. They've been sent off to help save literal shiploads of people from dying, and it borderline turns into Goofball Adventures. I do like when Star Wars movies go to interesting locations, but I dunno, this one didn't sit well with me. Maybe if they fiddled with it a little more or something. I only saw the movie once, a month ago, so maybe a second viewing when it becomes available on home video/demand/etc. might change my mind on some things

I just saw the movie tonight, so now I just got home and decided to start looking through spoilers with your post that I remembered seeing. I agree with a lot of your comments, with the exception of one thing: I thought the part where they went to the gambling planet was maybe the best part of the whole movie. Riding those animals through the city was brilliant. It was really important, too, for a few reasons. For one thing, it provided the movie with an extended sequence of the stuff I like seeing in a Star Wars picture. And by doing that, it helped break up the "too many space battles" flaw you mentioned. Also, the end called back to it, because the young kids/jockeys they met on that planet are the future of the Resistance. If they don't show up in the next films, at least there is the idea a new generation is waiting in the wings, perhaps for Rei to train someday.

I was telling my wife it was important that Luke not actually die by whiny Kylo Ren's angry hand--as Luke himself alluded to--because this way, there's a chance of some sort of redemption for Kylo Ren in the end. And that seems like the arc the writers are probably going for (or maybe Lucasfilm itself is). It's the same reason Kylo Ren not pulling on the trigger that might have killed his mother was so key.

Anyway, I mostly enjoyed the movie in spite of a few very minor flaws. I thought it was very well put together, and I thought the previous one was good also. Overall, I think we're 2/3 of the way through a really great trilogy... assuming it stops there. Which I think it will, as Disney probably would like to start another trilogy after this one.
