I wonder if any companies out there are thinking about getting into the console war. In the next couple of years I'd think it would be possible to make a system that would blow away ps3 and 360 graphics wise for a pretty reasonable price. Seeing Crysis on my brother's PC got me thinking about this.
I think Microsoft and Sony jumped the gun on making the next gen systems and put the emphasis on features other than graphics, like live for xbox, and blu-ray for sony. The graphics in these systems are improvements over last gen, but I don't think they are THAT much better.
Who knows what company would try it, but in a few years a new system with far superior graphics could definitely work as long as it is priced right.

honestgamer - November 25, 2007 (09:08 PM) In a few years, the Xbox 360 will be at least 4 and more likely 5 years old, and Microsoft will have announced a successor to the Xbox 360. I don't think anyone jumped the gun at all. Console games traditionally start to look poor compared to PC games within the first year or two, so nothing has really changed this time around. I don't think graphics are necessarily where things are headed, either. Some of the first-gen PlayStation 3 (and second-gen Xbox 360 stuff) looks pretty dang good and things will continue to improve as developers come to grip with the hardware. By the end of the cycle, I bet you'll see a lot of people wondering why games even need to look better at all. Even if that isn't the case, there comes a point where it costs too much money to continue making games that look good enough to fully use available hardware. AI and such are going to become the focus more and more. |

jiggs - November 26, 2007 (08:30 AM) i think it would be cool if they had consoles that were powerful enough to outlive the typical 5 year life cycle. i'm getting tired of manufacturers moving onto new consoles a little prematurely and giving half-ass support on their older machines. for once! maybe sooner or later this will happen. |

daff - November 26, 2007 (08:58 AM) Look at 360. They rushed it out. Not near enough on shelves at launch and tons of defective systems. Sony and Nintendo took their time a bit more, but still didn't have enough systems out at launch. I don't see what the hurry is to hit that 5 year window. I love my next gen systems, but I think these companies need to learn some lessons for next time. |
