Free game!
November 14, 2006

Since starting my Computer Games Production course, I have been a busy boy indeed. One of the modules has me using Game Maker to create a mini-game every week, based on a different theme. So, we have had such things as 'Collection', or 'Colour'. Usually, I make a game engine first, using blocks and circles for the graphics. I go back and make the sprites later.

This week, our theme was 'Random element'. I did my usual thing, and then realised I was on to somthing just using the blocks. So, I kept them! The finished result is a game I call Untouchable, and I have uploaded it here. I would greatly appreciate it if people would play this, and give me any feedback. Naturally, I intend to add music at some point.

The information you guys give me will be most helpful, as you are the guys I am aiming at. The 'hardcore' gamers, who are net-savvy and thus not fazed by digital distribution. Eventually I plan to finish off all my projects, and package them on a site under the name "WeeGames ™".

So, yeah. Tell me what you think!

Just downloaded it and had a few initial games. I love the sound effect for the flashing blocks on survival! That mode could rteally do with a background, though.

More thoughts later.

I've played the Marathon game and it was pretty cool. I would say it would be nice to see a transition effect between backgrounds. A new one just suddenly popping up can be starting and has messed me up more than once.

One of the most frustrating things about the early game is one you probably shouldn't change: it goes a bit slow and I get impatient waiting for some blocks to move out of the way so I can dive in and get a start that has materialized in an inconvenient location. With music and scene transitions, maybe a few tweaks here and there, this could be quite the addictive little package!

I appreciate the ffedback, guys, I really do. What particularly pleases me is that almost all the feedback I am getting is focussed on the aesthatics, rather than on the actual gameplay.

To answer your concerns ;

I thought long and hard about what background to use for the Survival mode, and decided to stick with plain for the reason that once there are 20 or so blocks moving about, you have enough to be looking at already. That is a game balance decision that I think is justified once you see just how hard the game can get.

As to the background image transitions, I THINK that including them will actually make them too distracting. The idea is that each successive background is more of a distraction than the previous one, being harder to not see, and if you ever get far enough to see any of the backgrounds that appear over about 250 stars, you will better understand what I was aiming for.

I now have ideas for at least 5 more modes, and I will work on them when I get the chance. (Hardcore mode, Nightmare mode, Frenzy mode, Timed mode, and even a Multiplayer!) But, it probably won't be for a week or so. Today's theme is 'incomplete information', and I have no idea at all what I am going to do to incorporate that into a game!
