Funny how googling a game you liked once a year means it eventually turns up, or the Google searches eventually go the right way. In fact there's another game called Pharaoh's Revenge that's completely different, and that was another red herring in my search.
Along the way I found it has a connotation as does Montezuma's Revenge, another classic old game.
But perhaps the most valuable link for tracking down an old game you know the name of is here. I have it bookmarked. You can google the author's name, and if you don't know the game's name, you can pinpoint the year, etc. It's also linked up a few games I really enjoyed that were written by the same author, but I forgot.
I played this game back when it was hyped as a Lode Runner style game. You go around collecting and placing ladders and grabbing ankhs at the top of the board. Then you fall into an up-arrow to get to the next level. It's not quite as intuitive as Lode Runner and not quite as fun, either, but it has 200 levels I definitely want to hack through.
This is probably the last big game I remember and always wanted to play. A guide will take a while for it, but who knows, I might write a review for it. I remember how much fun I used to make of the Commodore 64 being so slow, but I was secretly jealous of all the games. Now it has several disk image repositories AND you can also speed it up! (Which Pharaoh's Revenge really needs.)
